Virat Kohli, the legendary Indian batter, has emphasized the evolving nature of T20 cricket while highlighting the growing standards of the game with the amount of promising young talent in the format.
Virat Kohli has framed modern T20 cricket to be a format where the pressure no longer builds only after some balls or overs; however, it changes almost every delivery, and the dynamics of the game shift from every position of the game.

Virat Kohli revealed that his own understanding of trophies and big matches has changed over the span of his career. “I started off thinking of trophies as accolades and achievements,” Kohli said. “But at the end of the day, why do people get so involved and engrossed, say, for a semifinal or final?”
Kohli added that when people feel like it and connect with the game on a different level, then the watch goes 10 levels higher. He hence said that while creating an impact, the true challenge is not only to win trophies but also to impress those who are witnessing the game.
“He said, it feels like a different game altogether. It’s not even a different format. Because every ball is an intense event. The momentum can shift in every ball of the game. It’s almost like you’re playing a high-intensity Champions League football game where one bad pass or one slip and the whole competition is done,” Kohli said, also sharing his recent talks with KL Rahul.
Kohli bows down to the ability and skill set of players in modern cricket
Virat Kohli praised the next generation of superstar cricketers who have surfaced in T20 cricket and praised their level of excellence and skill set.
“The talent is through the roof. Their hand-eye coordination and the confidence they have in those abilities are outstanding. It’s lovely for people to watch. It’s great for the game.”
“There are different ways to achieve the same goals,” Kohli said. Kohli also argued that modern-day cricket has immense value for skill sets, but it also leaves room for classical methods. He cited the example of Graeme Smith, who, despite his limitations of off-field play, was very successful as a Test batter and was unbeatable with his leg-side play.
“It’s not like an AB de Villiers kind of, you know, everything aligned and just perfection. Not like Sachin Tendulkar, where the bat’s coming down absolutely in a straight line. But people have found ways to succeed who have not had those kinds of abilities or that kind of way to play the game. It’s lovely for people to watch. It’s great for the game.
“At the same time, you have an opportunity for, say, players like myself, Bhuvi, and KL. KL, for example, for that matter. He’s doing great things, you know, again, in T20 cricket.”
Virat Kohli reflects on the balance and technical foundation of T20 cricket
Virat Kohli has also claimed that the technical foundations of cricket remain valuable even if the format changes. Several skills needed to be repeated, especially for players who grew up building the game around Test cricket.
“There are certain technicalities of the game that will never go out of fashion. You need technique. You need balance. You need some kind of symmetry to play this game.
“And because we’ve worked on those technical aspects for so long in our lives, from very young, because we aspired to play Test cricket and the technical foundation was the be-all and end-all for us—when you have technical abilities in place, you can always adjust,” added Kohli.
Kohli cited Bhuvneshwar Kumar as an ideal example, who has also been particularly magnificent with the ball. He cited his repetition of clarity and execution, which has handed him tremendous success this season, with six three-fers in eleven appearances.
