Sunil Gavaskar tears into Riyan Parag’s on-field decisions after RR crumble against DC in key IPL 2026 fixture

The battle for the IPL 2026 playoffs intensified in dramatic fashion during the 62nd match of the tournament at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday. In a high-stakes encounter, Delhi Capitals (DC) successfully chased down a formidable target of 194 to hand Rajasthan Royals (RR) their third consecutive defeat. While the match showcased exceptional batting firepower from both sides, it was a highly controversial tactical blunder in the death overs that stole the headlines and left cricket pundits questioning the leadership acumen of the Rajasthan skipper.

Sunil Gavaskar blasts Riyan Parag over his captaincy call in RR’s defeat to DC during crucial IPL 2026 clash

Defending 193 runs, Rajasthan Royals seemed well within the contest until skipper Riyan Parag made a baffling tactical choice. With Delhi Capitals requiring 35 runs off the final three overs, Parag handed the ball to part-time spinner Donovan Ferreira for the crucial 18th over. The decision backfired spectacularly as Ferreira leaked 16 runs, including two massive sixes, completely shifting the momentum back to the hosts.

Speaking on Star Sports, former India captain and legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar did not hold back, labeling the captaincy call a suicidal move.

Handing the ball to Donovan Ferreira to bowl the 18th over was a suicidal move. You are bringing a slow bowler on a pitch offering him no help. He was just bowling in the slot. It was his first over of the match. He had also scored a golden duck with the bat. Sometimes you must look at where the luck is going that day,” Gavaskar remarked sharply.

The batting icon emphasized that confidence plays a massive role in such high-pressure scenarios. “If he had scored 40 or 50 runs and was high on confidence, giving him an over would have made sense. But he got out first ball, and you still gave him the ball. He went for 16 runs in that over, and the match was gone. Done and dusted. Riyan Parag could have handed the ball to a proper bowler, a regular bowler. Even if that bowler gave away 20 runs, that’s not the point. The point is that at that crucial stage, giving the ball to Donovan Ferreira was a suicidal decision by Rajasthan Royals,” he added

The tactical error left regular bowlers under immense pressure. Brijesh Sharma leaked 12 runs in the penultimate over, leaving Adam Milne to defend just seven runs in the final six balls. DC’s impact sub, Ashutosh Sharma, finished the game in the first two deliveries of the 20th over to seal a 5-wicket victory.

Earlier in the match, Mitchell Starc’s death-bowling masterclass restricted RR to 193/8. Despite blistering half-centuries from Dhruv Jurel (53 off 40) and Riyan Parag (51 off 26), alongside an explosive 46 off 21 balls from young prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi, RR collapsed from a position of strength. Starc picked up 4 for 40, executing a sensational over-hat-trick in the 15th over by removing Parag, Ferreira, and debutant Ravi Singh.

Gavaskar lauded Starc’s situational awareness: “Starc didn’t have a great powerplay. But when he came back at the death, he bowled with great control. He didn’t let the Rajasthan batters free their arms. He choked the runs and picked up crucial wickets. Those wickets turned the match in Delhi’s favour.”

DC hold nerve to outlast RR in dramatic IPL 2026

The scorecard painted a picture of a thrilling, high-scoring chase where Delhi Capitals held their nerve when it mattered most. Chasing 194, DC got off to a flyer in the Powerplay, racking up 72 runs without loss. Openers Abishek Porel (51 off 31 balls) and KL Rahul (56 off 42 balls) laid a magnificent foundation with a 105-run opening stand.

Though Jofra Archer (2/35) and Brijesh (2/44) triggered a mini-collapse to reduce DC to 153/4, Axar Patel‘s unbeaten, ice-cool 34 off 18 balls kept the Capitals in the hunt. Supported by a blazing cameo from Ashutosh Sharma (18* off 5), Delhi comfortably scaled the target with 4 balls to spare, finishing at 197/5. The victory keeps Delhi’s playoff hopes alive while leaving Rajasthan to regroup after a costly tactical misstep.
