Sheetal Rashe Chhetri- A musician from the great state of Sikkim

Date:

Introduction

This is a feature proposed by our North-Eastern state peers and has been stalled in the pipeline of writing for almost six to seven months for reasons that are inexcusable. Sheetal is our first ever singer to represent the state of Sikkim. It is such a surprise how underestimated this singer on Smule. We are very happy to have her profile featured here alongside a line of fantastic singers we have lined up so far. More important is that not many people in India know about talents from the great state of Sikkim. Extremely thankful to our eyes and ears from the North-Eastern state and efforts to screen hundreds of profiles, which would have been impossible otherwise.

Sheetal Rashe Chhetri- A musician from the great state of Sikkim

Briefly describe yourself

I am Sheetal Rashe Chhetri. I am from Gangtok, Sikkim. I can say that music is a big part of my life. I love to sing and have been doing so since my childhood. I am a housewife and mother of a son. I spend my free time pursuing my passion for singing.

Describe growing up, how music became a big part of your life, interested in details how your family, friends, teachers help discover your talent

Singing is my passion and I grew up with it. It was one of the school teachers that recognized my singing talent at an early age and would encourage me to sing in class. My friends and family have always appreciated my love for singing and have extended their support at all times.

What is music to you? or What does it mean to you?

As mentioned earlier, Music is my life. Without music, my life would have no meaning. I love listening to all types of music and enjoy singing even if I am alone. It gives me satisfaction and some kind of relaxation. An enjoyment that is inexpressible.

Are you classically trained? if not what is your thoughts on the importance of it

“Although I have been very musically inclined from the very beginning of my life, I wasn’t fortunate enough to receive extensive music training due to unfavorable circumstances during my childhood. However, I did study music for about two years of classical training sometime later. I believe in the importance of classical training since it helps us to know and learn music much more deeply and make better sense in practice.”

What is your take on lyrics in the music? Your thoughts

“Lyrics put life into music. It is the lyrics that connect me to music. In fact, I really get deeply involved in the lyrics blending well into the music. There have been times when I have gotten so emotionally connected with lyrics that some songs make me cry while I was singing. The right lyrics are what make a song great.

Growing up in Sikkim, how does the music of your state influence your music?

“Yes, music of North Eastern states does influence my music a lot. The region’s music has a very typical flavor of its own. You may also find this is clearly noticeable in many Bollywood songs as well. Liem songs by the Burmans, Hemant Kumar Ji, and several other stalwarts of the Music industry have a great following and appreciation in the Indian film industry. I also like Nepali music which has a wonderful “pahadi” flavor.”

What are your career ambitions with music?

Although I have my family obligations, I still strive towards making a career in the music industry. I would be interested in making an album of my own if such an opportunity should be present.

In five years from now, where do you see yourself and your music should be?

I am not sure! But I will definitely be singing and learning music as I go along where life takes me. I like to sing a variety of songs of different genres. Ghazals give me a feeling of higher musical connection, Rock n Pop styles make me happy, Regional Nepali songs connect me to my roots. If I have to say it in one line, that would be..Music is my life, the lyrics are my story!
