Suicide bid by woman at Guntur grievance redressal creates panic

Tension prevailed at the Guntur Collectorate on Monday after a young woman allegedly attempted suicide during the Public Grievance Redressal System (PGRS) programme. The incident gained significance as Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad was present at the venue reviewing the grievance redressal proceedings.

According to officials, the 26-year-old unmarried woman, reportedly consumed pesticide within the Collectorate premises, creating panic among officials and the public. Authorities immediately rushed her to the Government General Hospital in Guntur for treatment, where her condition is said to be stable.

According to preliminary information, the woman took the extreme step following prolonged family disputes linked to a property issue. She was reportedly distressed over what she alleged was lack of justice in a case handled by the Nallapadu police station. In her petition, she allegedly held her father and some of his relatives responsible for her situation and stated that they should be held accountable if anything happened to her. She further alleged that a relative working as a constable was influencing the proceedings.

Speaking to The Hindu, Guntur District Collector C.M. Sai Kanth Varma said that the issue was not related to any government service matter and was essentially of a legal nature.

Meanwhile, Guntur Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal said that a case had been registered by the women’s mother in 2020 alleging dowry harassment, domestic violence and an extramarital relationship against the father. He added that the matter is currently pending before a district court.

Police and district authorities are further investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
