England has qualified for the Super 8 stages of the 2026 T20 World Cup. They have been seeded in the group alongside Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and Pakistan. The Three Lions lost only one game, coming to the next stage, which was against the West Indies. The Harry Brook-led side will be facing the co-hosts Sri Lanka on Sunday.
Jacob Bethell has been one of the best upcoming cricketers for England across formats. He has showcased his talent for the three Lions and has been the unofficial vice-captain for the side in the T20 format, which means that if Brook gets injured or taken off the field, Bethell will be leading the charge during that time, as per The Telegraph.
Jacob Bethell to captain England after Harry Brook
Jacob Bethell has the experience of captaining the side that performed the role of a stand-in against Ireland last September. At the age of 22, he became the youngest ever cricketer to captain the side. England hopes that Jacob Bethell will lead the country in the near future in all formats.

“I think it would be something in the future I’d like to do and have a crack at,” Bethell said about the captaincy. “But I can’t say it’s on the top of my list right now. However, there has been no official confirmation on whether he will take over the captaincy from Harry Brook after a controversial incident occurred last year with the latter.
English players caused serious offence
Brook fought with a bouncer outside a nightclub in Wellington in the early hours of November 1. As per the reports from The Telegraph, Brook visited the nightclub alone. However, later it was discovered that Bethell and Josh Tongue were also part of England’s night out the night before a one-day international.
Jacob Bethell is currently under investigation by the Cricket Regulator for the events of that evening in Wellington. He has already been fined by their Cricket Board for the incident.
Jacob Bethell upcoming star for England
Jacob Bethell has displayed his talent batting at No.3 in Test and T20I format for the three lions. He did have a sensational series against New Zealand. He also played a knock of 154 in the Sydney Test against Australia at the very same batting position.
Bethell, in the T20Is, batted in the same position twice before being fully accustomed to the same number in the shortest format of the game. He has scored 143 runs at an average of 35.8. Bethell looked comfortable in the ongoing major event and has also been England’s leading run-scorer so far in the T20 World Cup.
Jacob Bethell’s ability to play spin will be very crucial on the wickets of Sri Lanka, where the ball tends to grip and spin a bit, and the boundaries are also on the bigger side.
The Three Lions have struggled on spin pitches; however, they are well adapted to the conditions, as the last series they played before the World Cup was in Sri Lanka. The Three Lions completed a 3-0 T20 series sweep over the Island nations.
