Gautam Gambhir’s contract extension till 2028 confirmed as Olympics medal mission revealed

Date:

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir is set to remain in charge until the 2027 ODI World Cup, and he can get his contract extension confirmed. Gambhir is open to continuing with the team through the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics if given the opportunity by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Gambhir is currently coaching the team during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. India have won all three group-stage matches against the USA, Namibia, and Pakistan, sealing qualification for the Super 8s. They still have one group fixture left, with a match against the Netherlands scheduled later this week.

Gautam Gambhir Open to Coaching India Until 2028 Olympics

According to a report in Dainik Jagran, Gautam Gambhir’s current term will continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup. He is also willing to extend his role if he gets the chance to coach India at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Gautam Gambhir Receives Stunning IPL Offer From Rajasthan Royals Ahead of IPL 2026

The report stated that Gautam Gambhir has been approached by the Rajasthan Royals (RR). One of the new stakeholders in the franchise has proposed a triple role for Gambhir, which includes positions as CEO, mentor, and partner.

Several existing Rajasthan Royals shareholders are in the process of selling their stakes, with the deal now in a transferable stage. As part of the proposal, Gambhir has reportedly been offered a two-to-three per cent stake in the franchise, along with executive and mentoring responsibilities.

“A majority of Rajasthan Royals shareholders are selling their stake to the new owners. The deal is currently in a transferable state. One of the owners in RR’s new management has offered Gambhir a two-to-three per cent stake, in addition to the roles of CEO and mentor,” the report said.

Why Gautam Gambhir Cannot Accept the Rajasthan Royals’ Offer

However, Gautam Gambhir cannot take the Rajasthan Royals offer. A Supreme Court ruling, based on the Lodha Committee’s recommendations, does not allow a person to work with the Indian team and an IPL franchise at the same time due to a conflict of interest.

If Gambhir accepts the Rajasthan proposal, he must step down as India head coach. People close to him have not commented publicly but say he remains fully focused on his current role. His contract with India runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

After retiring as a player, Gambhir worked with two IPL teams. He served as mentor of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) from 2022 to 2023 and guided them to the playoffs in both seasons. He later joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as mentor in 2024 before becoming India head coach in July 2024.
