A massive win for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). They left no room for the home team, the Mumbai Indians (MI), to make a return in the contest. In all departments of the match at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, RCB registered a massive victory against MI.

RCB was instantly in the front seat after the conclusion of the first innings, having scored 240 runs in 120 balls for the loss of 4 wickets. It was not only a win or a matter of grabbing 2 points, but also making a statement by the defending champions.

In the previous match of the ongoing IPL 2026, the Rajat Patidar-led team suffered a humiliating defeat at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. From their were determined to bounce back through a commanding victory and they did it. They did it by maintaining a proper plan. RCB not only batted nicely against the Mumbai Indians, but also did not allow the MI batters to perform freely in the second innings.

MI’s middle-order batter Sherfane Rutherford tried his best to pull out a stunning victory. At a point in the second innings, even a total of 200 was looking for from the arch of the Mumbai batters. With the Caribbean batter’s explosive knock, they replied to RCB with 222 runs in 20 overs, while Bengaluru’s score was 240.

RCB won the match by 18 runs. Sherfane Rutherford remained unbeaten for 71 runs, playing 31 runs. He got only one 4 but smashed a staggering number of nine 6s which took his strike rate to 229.03.

According to stats by Cricbuzz, Sherfane Rutherford’s 71*(31) is the second-highest score for MI while batting at NO.6 or below after 91(34) by Hardik Pandya against KKR at Eden Gardens in 2019. Nine sixes by him, also the joint-most for MI in IPL batting at No. 6 or below alongside Hardik in that same game at Kolkata.

After the entertaining match at the Wankhede Stadium, RCB is now in third position with 6 points and a net run rate of +1.148. Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings are in first and second place with 8 and 7 points, respectively. And the Mumbai Indians, they are dropped to 8th place with 2 points and a negative after playing 4 matches in the 10-team league.

“Yes and at the same point in time, I think we conceded way too many (runs) as well. I think that was always going to be catch-up. I think in the last couple of games, as a bowling unit or even as a batting unit, we’ve been catching up in the game rather than leading the game,” Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya said in the post-match ceremony.

“We really need to reflect, really need to see what best we can do and how we can get that momentum and that click which we require. We have a couple of days off from here and we’re outside the leg-stump play again. To be very honest, now a lot of things need to be rethought. Definitely, it’s not working”, Mumbai Indians skipper added.
