‘Hopefully, one day he will be in my position’ – Gautam Gambhir reacts to MS Dhoni’s viral ‘smile’ comment post T20 World Cup final

Date:

India coach Gautam Gambhir has responded to MS Dhoni’s viral Instagram caption where the latter had written, ‘Coach sahab, the smile looks good on you,’ in his social media post while congratulating the Indian team on their triumph at the 2026 T20 World Cup on March 08 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

“Coach Sahab, your smile looks great on you; intensity with a smile is a killer combination. Very well done. Enjoy, guys,” Dhoni had written in his Instagram post after the Men in Blue lifted their third T20 World Cup title.

Appearing at an event a few days after the T20 World Cup win, the head coach was asked to share his thoughts on Dhoni’s comments regarding his smile. Gambhir responded by saying that someone like Dhoni coming to watch the final was actually a great motivator for the team. He further said that one day Dhoni might become the head coach of the Indian team, and Gambhir will be able to write similarly for him.

“It was good on him to come and watch the T20 World Cup final. Good on him. He asked me to smile. Hopefully, one day he will be in my position, and I can write the same thing for him. And hopefully, he can smile from the dugout,” Gambhir responded with a huge smile at a RevSportz event.

Notably, Gambhir has played a pivotal part in India’s dominance in white-ball cricket ever since the Delhi-born has taken charge of the side. Under his coaching, the Indians have won the ICC Champions Trophy, followed by the Men’s 20-over Asia Cup in 2025. The T20 World Cup win in 2026 became the third multinational title for Gambhir as India’s coach.

Dhoni, on the other hand, remains the most successful Indian captain to date, with a record of three ICC titles won. He captained India to 2007 T20 World Cup victory, followed by the ODI World Cup win in 2011. Notably, Gambhir was the highest scorer for India in both the finals (75 versus Pakistan in 2007 and 97 versus Sri Lanka in 2011).
