India Approves 25 LMT Wheat, 5 LMT Sugar Export Quota

Date:

In a calibrated move to manage surplus stocks and support farmers, the Indian government has approved wheat and sugar exports for the current season.

The government has allowed the export of 25 LMT of wheat and an additional 5 LMT of wheat products. This follows a review of stock levels and price trends. Officials said the decision balances domestic food security. At the same time, it reflects the need to ensure remunerative returns for farmers.

Wheat stocks remain comfortable. Private players hold around 75 LMT in 2025–26, nearly 32 LMT higher than last year. By 1st April, 2026, wheat stocks in the central pool with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) are projected to be around 182 LMT. Wheat acreage in Rabi 2026 has also risen to 334.17 lakh hectares from 328.04 lakh hectares last year. This indicates expectations of another strong harvest.

The export decision aims to stabilise domestic prices, improve market liquidity, prevent distress sales during peak arrivals, and ensure efficient stock rotation.

On sugar, the government has permitted export of an additional 5 LMT during Sugar Season 2025–26. Earlier, 15 LMT had already been allowed for export on 14th November, 2025. So far, around 1.97 LMT has been exported till 31st January, 2026, while 2.72 LMT has been contracted.

The additional 5 LMT quota will be allocated to willing sugar mills on a pro-rata basis. Mills must export at least 70% of their allotted quantity by 30th June, 2026. The quota cannot be swapped between mills. The move is aimed at boosting exports and managing the country’s surplus sugar stocks.
