Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) opened their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 account with a composed five-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad completing a controlled chase of 157 with one ball to spare. Rishabh Pant anchored the chase with an unbeaten 68-run knock of 50 balls, helping LSG seal their first points of the season.
LSG laid the platform early through Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh. Markram, facing his former side, set the tempo with a fluent 45 off 27 balls. Pant, who walked out at No. 3 after opening the innings in the last game, adopted a measured approach initially, rotating strike and allowing the innings to settle as LSG reached 81/2 at the halfway mark.
Despite wickets falling at the other end, Pant held his nerve to carry his team across the finish line, resisting the urge to go aerial as he hit 9 fours without any maximums.
Earlier in the game, LSG won the toss and captain Rishabh Pant decided to bowl first saying, “Their (SRH) main strength is batting. So, let them bat first.”
The gamble paid off as Shami struck in the very first over, removing Abhishek Sharma (0) with a clever slower delivery. He followed it up by dismissing Travis Head (7), leaving SRH’s explosive opening pair back in the dugout within the first three overs.
Prince Yadav castled SRH captain Ishan Kishan (1) in the fourth over and Pant pulled off a brilliant one-handed catch to dismiss Liam Livingstone, reducing LSG to 26/4 within 8 overs.
Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy then joined forces for SRH and helped revive the innings with a fighting 116-run stand off 63 balls for the fifth wicket.
The pair were finally split in the 18th over when Manimaran Siddharth sent back Reddy on 56 off 33 balls. Klaasen (62 off 41 balls) departed in the next over as LSG mounted a late comeback to restrict SRH to a below-par 156/9.
