Kashmir division has more voters than Jammu, new data shows

JAMMU: Kashmir division has more registered voters (4,581,375) than that in Jammu division (4,161,503), as per the latest district-wise enrolment data presented in J&K assembly on Wednesday.The UT has 8,742,878 voters, comprising 4,465,161 men, 4,277,568 women, and 149 from third gender, with Srinagar district topping (29) in the third category. Pulwama has 19 voters from third gender and Kupwara two. Kashmir division has 99 such voters.Jammu district has the highest number of voters (1,189,555) and Kishtwar district has the lowest at 178,402, the govt told the assembly in response to queries raised by PDP’s Pulwama MLA, Waheed Parra, who also asked the govt to list steps taken to achieve 100 per cent enrolment.“The rise in the number of voters from the Valley can largely be attributed to greater participation by youth and first-time voters after years of boycott,” Parra said.The govt said in accordance with Representation of the People Act, 1950, Election Commission of India has notified four qualifying dates each year for a special summary revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in the UT.
