2-Gochujang Chicken wingsSticky, sweet, savory & spicy – these Gochujang chicken wings possess all that you desire for in a phenomenal chicken wings recipe!

The best part of my Gochujang chicken wings is that they are made in the air fryer which means making these Gochujang chicken wings is as hassle-free as it can possibly be!

3-Gochujang Chicken wingsWhat are Gochujang chicken wings?

Gochujang is a classic Korean condiment that is very commonly used in Korean cooking. It is a fermented red chilli paste containing many other ingredients and sold as a concentrated thick paste in a tub.

Earlier, about 7 to 8 years ago, it was not easily available in India.

I got my first tub of Gochujang long back from my lovely cousin who lives in Malaysia as I have been experimenting with my cooking skills a lot back then (Well, I still do!)!

4-Gochujang Chicken wingsWith the increasing cultural exchanges through social media and people being open to try new things, such authentic cooking ingredients from around the world are being easily found in Indian supermarkets nowadays. Thank God for that!

Now that you understand what Gochujang is, you can quickly make out what Gochujang chicken wings are!

When you coat your chicken wings with this tempting Gochujang paste along with a few other ingredients and air fry them to perfection you get one of the most delicious chicken wings of all time!

And that my friend are Gochujang chicken wings!

Chicken wings: These spicy yet mildly sweet chicken wings are so addictive that no matter how much you make, it will vanish in minutes!

I made my Gochujang chicken wings using 750 grams (which is about 1 & ½ pounds) of wings which should approximately serve 3 to 4 people as an appetizer.

But that holds true only if you have mindful eaters in the crowd! Else you will need about double the amount of chicken wings as these are genuinely addictive!

6-Gochujang Chicken wingsGochujang: This is of course the star of this recipe – the Korean Gochujang!

As mentioned above, it is a fermented chilli paste with many other aromatic ingredients packing a super punch of flavors that will blow your mind every time you use it in any recipe!

You will need a generous amount of this paste for imparting its true flavors to your food. By the way, do not get intimidated by its bright red color; it is not as hot as it seems from that redness!

You can easily find it on Amazon now. It usually comes in a large tub that will last you for 5 to 6 recipes.

7-Gochujang Chicken wingsFlavorless oil: I used a drizzle of sunflower oil over my chicken wings to prevent them drying while being air fried at high heat.

Oil also helps extract the flavors of the dry aromatics that I usually use on my chicken.

Aromatics: None of my chicken recipes is complete with a dash of aromatics! When I am air frying, I prefer dry aromatic powders i.e. garlic powder and onion powder.

When I am sautéing things on the stove in oil, I prefer using freshly grated ginger and garlic.

8-Gochujang Chicken wingsSeasoning: Do note that the Gochujang, or any other readymade spice paste for that matter, comes with salt added in it. So be a little cautious while adding extra salt.

However you will need some amount of salt and black pepper in order to extract all the deliciousness of the spices!

Just cut down the amount of salt by 25 percent of what you feel should have been needed had you not been using Gochujang.

9-Gochujang Chicken wingsHow to make Air Fryer Gochujang chicken wings?

Step 1: Wash and pat dry the chicken wings. Take them in a mixing bowl. Drizzle the oil of your choice over the chicken wings.

Step 2: Now add all the dry ingredients – garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper.

Step 3: Using a spatula, give a good mix to the chicken wings to coat each wing evenly with seasonings and aromatics on all sides. Set them aside.

10-Gochujang Chicken wingsStep 4: In another large bowl, take the Gochujang paste. Ensure the bowl is large enough to hold all the chicken wings.

Pro tip: Gochujang chilli paste tends to be thick and when refrigerated it becomes stiff & unspreadable. So I microwaved it for 1 to 2 minutes to soften it with a tiny drizzle of oil to make it spreadable.

Step 5: Give the Gochujang paste a good stir to ensure it is soft enough to coat the chicken wings.

11-Gochujang Chicken wingsStep 6: Now drop the seasoned chicken wings into the bowl with Gochujang and using a spatula give them a good mix to evenly coat all sides of each wing with the Korean chilli paste.

Step 7: Once you are happy with the chicken mixing, let them sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. When you are ready to cook them, preheat your air fryer at 190 C / 375 F and set the timer to 20 minutes.

Step 8: Spray the bottom of the basket with oil to prevent the Gochujang chicken wings from sticking.

12-Gochujang Chicken wingsStep 9: Transfer the marinated chicken wings one by one to the air fryer basket arranging them in a single layer. Make sure you do not pile up the chicken wings; then they will not cook evenly.

Step 10: Air fry the Gochujang chicken wings until halfway through cooking time. Then take the basket out and flip over each chicken wing.

Step 11: Brush any leftover Gochujang marinade over the wings. Return the basket to the air fryer and continue cooking for the remaining time.

13-Gochujang Chicken wingsStep 12: Once the air frying completes, take the basket out and check the doneness of the chicken.

Pro tip: Please note that there will be significant charring of the chicken as Gochujang paste has a good amount of sugar added into it and sugar gets charred when exposed to high heat for long.

Step 13: Your air fryer Gochujang chicken wings should be done by now and ready to serve! If you feel otherwise, air fry them for 5 more minutes and they should be good to go.

Step 14: Transfer them to a serving bowl and enjoy them with a Greek yogurt dip on the side!
