Rajpal Yadav Granted Interim Bail In 9crore Cheque Bounce Case

Date:

Actor Rajpal Yadav has been granted interim bail by the Delhi High Court in a Rs 9 crore cheque bounce case. The 54 year old actor, known for his impeccable comic timing, had been lodged in Tihar Jail after surrendering on February 5 to serve a six month sentence. On Monday, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma ordered relief after noting that Yadav deposited Rs 1.5 crore in the bank account of complainant M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd.

The case dates back to 2012 when Rajpal borrowed Rs 5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial debut Ata Pata Laapata. After the film failed at the box office, losses mounted and with bounced cheques, interest and penalties, the outstanding amount reportedly swelled to nearly Rs 9 crore. Multiple cheques issued by the actor were dishonoured, leading to criminal proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act. A magisterial court in April 2018 sentenced him to six months in jail, and in 2019 a sessions court upheld the conviction.

Despite earlier deposits, including two demand drafts of Rs 75 lakh in October 2025 and a later offer of Rs 25 lakh along with a fresh payment plan, the High Court had earlier refused more time and directed him to surrender. His interim bail plea citing a family wedding was adjourned to February 16. While granting relief now, the judge said, “We are granting you an interim suspension of sentence… It is till the next date of hearing.” The court also directed him to surrender his passport, not leave the country without permission, and remain present either physically or virtually on the next hearing scheduled for March 18.

Amid the legal turmoil, members of the film fraternity including Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, David Dhawan, Sonu Sood, Guru Randhawa and Mika Singh reportedly extended financial support. His wife, Radha Yadav, acknowledged the backing during the difficult phase. On the work front, Rajpal is next set to appear in Akshay Kumar’s horror comedy Bhoot Bangla, slated for release on April 10.
