Rohit Sharma set to retire after IPL 2026? Colossal truth behind viral claim revealed

Date:

Rumors about the future of Rohit Sharma in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have suddenly taken over social media. Many posts on X claimed that Rohit Sharma could retire from the IPL after the upcoming 2026 season, starting on March 28.

The viral chatter left many fans disheartened, especially the fans of the Mumbai Indians (MI), who have won five IPL trophies under Rohit’s captaincy. However, since 2024, Hardik Pandya has been leading the joint-most successful team of the league.

Some fans even suggested that the Mumbai Indians team management was thinking about moving forward without Rohit because of concerns around his recent batting numbers and fitness.

The Hitman was reportedly asked to enter the IPL auction at a lower price, which led to speculation that he could decide to retire from the league instead of playing for another team.

Reality different as Rohit Sharma has no retirement plans

However, the real situation seems to be very different. It is being said that Rohit has no immediate plans to retire from the world’s biggest T20 league, as he already stepped away from T20I and Test cricket. The former Indian captain is active only in ODI cricket.

He follows every BCCI guideline, including playing domestic cricket for Mumbai, as he aims to represent India at the ICC World Cup 2027. In fact, the veteran opener is working harder than ever to extend his cricket career. Over the last few months, Rohit has undergone a major fitness transformation and lost around 10 to 11 kilograms through intense training.

Rohit now looks leaner, quicker, and stronger on the field. The fitness program was reportedly designed with the help of his long-time mentor Abhishek Nayar, who guided him through a strict routine. Rohit’s new fitness push is believed to be part of his preparation for the 2027 World Cup.

Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma’s India future on radar as Gautam Gambhir begins planning for World Cup 2027

Meanwhile, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has started planning for the ICC World Cup 2027. The roadmap for the tournament is expected to be finalized after the upcoming IPL 2026.

Gambhir revealed that the team management and selectors’ plan will also bring clarity about the ODI future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who now play only 50-over cricket. With fewer ODIs in the modern calendar, they want to start preparations early for the tournament.

Gautam Gambhir was quoted as saying by India. Today: “The planning for the 2027 World Cup will start after the IPL. There are 25 to 30 ODIs between IPL 2026 and the World Cup. This format is not played a lot these days. The earlier we start planning, the better it will be for us.”

He added, “South Africa is not an easy place to play cricket. We have to figure out combinations and identify the players who are suited to the conditions. The selectors and the coaches will do that. By the time IPL 2026 ends, India will have a blueprint for the ODI World Cup 2027.”
