Shreyas Iyer’s sister responds after backlash over alleged trolling of KKR following IPL 2026 washout against PBKS

The high-octane environment of IPL 2026 took an unexpected turn off the field when Shresta Iyer, sister of Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer, found herself at the centre of a social media firestorm. The controversy erupted following the rain-marred clash between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens. After the match was officially abandoned, Shresta posted a light hearted video on Instagram using a popular Punjabi sentiment: “Saade Punjabiyan da dil vadda hunda hai, lo de ditta ek point” (Punjabis have a big heart; here, take this one point).

Shreyas Iyer’s sister issues statement after fans misinterpret her social media post

While intended as a playful jab reflecting the match’s result, the clip quickly went viral, drawing sharp criticism from the KKR faithful. Many fans viewed the comment as a personal attack on the franchise, especially given Iyer’s history with the team, having led KKR to their third IPL title in 2024. Supporters felt the remark lacked respect for a team that was struggling early in the 2026 season.

Responding to the escalating backlash, Shresta issued a heartfelt clarification on Tuesday evening via her Instagram stories. She emphasized that her intention was never to spread hatred or disrespect any franchise.

Guys, I don’t understand why the hatred is being spread. It’s just a game. The videos are just for fun, and I am here to support my brother,” she stated.

She further explained that her celebration was rooted in the competitive spirit of the league and urged fans to maintain a chill perspective, concluding her message with a call for peace and sportsmanship.

Punjab Kings’ dominant unbeaten run in IPL 2026

Despite the points being shared at Eden Gardens, the Punjab Kings have emerged as the team to beat in the opening weeks of IPL 2026. Under the tactical leadership of Shreyas Iyer, PBKS have maintained a clinical unbeaten streak that has propelled them to the top of the points table. The team currently sits comfortably with five points from three matches, showcasing a balanced blend of youthful exuberance and seasoned experience.

The foundation of their successful run was laid in their opening fixture against the Gujarat Titans, where debutant Cooper Connolly announced his arrival on the big stage with a blistering unbeaten 72. This victory was followed by a disciplined performance that cemented their status as early title contenders. Even in the truncated game against KKR, the Punjab bowling unit looked formidable. Led by the clinical Xavier Bartlett, who dismissed heavyweights like Cameron Green and Finn Allen in quick succession, the Kings had KKR reeling at 25/2 before the skies opened up.

As the tournament progresses, the Punjab Kings’ unbeaten tag serves as a testament to their revamped strategy and the leadership of Iyer, who seems to have seamlessly transitioned into his role with the Punjab outfit. While the washout may have denied them a potential third consecutive win, their momentum remains unshaken as they prepare for their upcoming encounter against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
