3 Dead in Hantavirus Outbreak Aboard Cruise Ship, W.H.O. Says

Three people have died aboard a cruise ship sailing the Atlantic Ocean after a suspected outbreak of the hantavirus, the World Health Organization said on Sunday.

One case of hantavirus infection has been confirmed in a laboratory, the organization said in a statement. There are five additional suspected cases, it said.

Of the six infected people, three have died and one person was in intensive care in South Africa, it said.

The W.H.O. said detailed investigations are continuing, “including further laboratory testing and epidemiological investigations.”

“Medical care and support are being provided to passengers and crew,” it added.

The organization did not identify the cruise ship operator.

Hantavirus refers to a family of viruses that are carried by rodents. It is often transmitted to humans by inhaling particles from dried mouse droppings.

While rare, hantavirus may spread among people, and can lead to severe respiratory illness. It requires careful patient monitoring, support and response, according to the W.H.O.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
