Toss Bangladesh chose to bat vs Australia
Bangladesh‘s stand-in captain
Towhid Hridoy chose to bat against
Australia in the first T20I in Chattogram on Wednesday. Hridoy was thrust into the leadership role for the first time in his international career after regular captain
Litton Das was ruled out because of a muscle tear that he picked up while batting during the third ODI in Dhaka earlier this week.
Bangladesh have brought in
Soumya Sarkar to bat in the top order, while
Parvez Hossain Emon, himself recovering from an illness, will keep wicket in Litton’s absence.
“Following a medical assessment, [Litton] has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain of the left calf muscle,” Bangladesh physio Delowar Hossain said. “The injury is considered minor, and he is progressing well in his recovery. He will be unavailable for the first match.
“However, depending on his response to treatment and rehabilitation, he may be fit for the subsequent matches. We will continue to monitor his progress closely.”
Mustafizur Rahman, who was rested for their last T20I series against New Zealand, is back, but Nahid Rana and Taskin Ahmed weren’t picked in the playing XI. Making his debut is
Abdul Gaffar Saqlain, who became Bangladesh’s 93rd T20I player.
Australia have made four changes since their last game in the format, handing debuts to
Nikhil Chaudhary and
Joel Davies, apart from adding
Spencer Johnson in the XI. They are without Travis Head, Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis from the XI that played against Oman in the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Green was withdrawn from the T20Is following the final ODI on Sunday. Head is resting at home while Maxwell and Stoinis were left out of the tour. Cooper Connolly also returns to the T20I XI following his maiden ODI century on Sunday in Dhaka.
Chaudhary becomes the first India born male player to represent Australia in international cricket since
Rex Sellers in 1964, while Lisa Sthalekar played 187 women’s internationals for Australia having been born in Pune.
This is Australia’s first match at this venue since a Test match in 2017.
