Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday (June 22, 2026) that Guwahati will be connected to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by non-stop flights from August 4.

He said Air India will operate direct flights between Guwahati and two UAE cities — Abu Dhabi and Dubai — to position Assam’s largest urban centre as a major travel and transit hub for Southeast Asia.

“Opening new avenues to connect Assam to the global community! Just days after EU [European Union] member states lifted their travel advisory for Assam, I am happy to share that from August 4, Air India will commence direct flights from Guwahati to Dubai and Abu Dhabi,” the Chief Minister posted on X.

The UAE will be the fourth country to be connected by direct flights from the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. The other countries are Bhutan, Singapore, and Thailand. The newly built Terminal 2 was adjudged as one of the most beautiful on Earth by a France-based organisation.

The Chief Minister said that his next goal was to establish direct air connectivity with Vietnam.

He stated that on June 20, the EU lifted a travel advisory for citizens of its 27 member countries, which had warned against travel to Assam.

“The encouraging news from the EU removed a blot on Assam which has been an issue since 1979,” he said, adding that the European bloc’s decision would help strengthen tourism, business ties, and people-to-people exchanges between the State and European nations.
