England produced a clinical all-round performance to outclass India by a massive 125 runs in the third T20I at Trent Bridge, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the five-match series. After the opening game was washed out, England have now won back-to-back matches, leaving the two-time defending T20 World Cup champions on the brink of a series defeat.
The visitors endured a night to forget as their batting unit crumbled spectacularly in pursuit of 202. India were bundled out for just 76 in 10.2 overs, recording their second-lowest total in T20Is and their biggest-ever defeat by runs in the format.
England recover well to post 201 despite regular wickets
After being asked to bat first, England recovered impressively to post 201/7 from their 20 overs. Phil Salt anchored the innings with a gritty 70 off 44 deliveries, overcoming a slow start before accelerating brilliantly in the second half of his knock. Sam Curran provided the late flourish with an unbeaten 41 off just 24 balls, while Jos Buttler chipped in with an aggressive 36 off 22 deliveries at the top.
India managed to strike at regular intervals to prevent England from running away with the game completely. Prince Yadav continued his impressive start to international cricket with figures of 2/30, dismissing Buttler and Harry Brook with clever variations. Harshit Rana picked up two wickets, while Axar Patel also took one wicket.
Although India kept England from posting an even bigger total, Salt’s well-paced innings and Curran’s late assault ensured the hosts crossed the 200-run mark on a surface that became easier to bat on as the innings progressed.
Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue dismantle India’s batting line-up
India’s chase never got going as England’s pace attack ripped through the top order with relentless aggression. Josh Tongue struck first by dismissing Abhishek Sharma before Jofra Archer removed Vaibhav Suryavanshi with a sharp bouncer. Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer also fell inside the powerplay, reducing India to 52/5.
Axar briefly threatened with a four and a six before edging Archer behind, while Tilak Varma was stumped off Will Jacks. Shivam Dube, Harshit Rana and the lower order offered little resistance as Tongue returned to complete career-best figures of 4/28.
No Indian batter managed to score more than 13 as the visitors were bundled out for just 76 in 10.2 overs. The defeat marked India’s fourth consecutive loss in T20Is and left them needing victories in the remaining two matches to avoid back-to-back bilateral series defeats.
