Why Was Satluj Removed From ZEE5 Just 48 Hours After Its Release? 

Satluj traces the life and work of Jaswant Singh Khalra, the Amritsar bank official who investigated the alleged illegal cremation of thousands during Punjab’s militancy years in the 1980s and 90s. The film had been stuck in censor limbo for over three years under its earlier titles, Ghallughara and Punjab ’95, after the CBFC demanded nearly 127 cuts in the original version of the movie. The makers, however, refused to compromise, which pushed the project straight to a direct-to-OTT release instead of theatres.

According to an ANI report, an official from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting went further, stating that Satluj did not possess the certification required for a theatrical release before it arrived on ZEE5, and that the makers changed the title and streamed it rather than complete that process. The ministry also alleged this violated the IT Rules, 2021, though it did not specify which provision was breached, and said it had received no prior representation from the filmmakers seeking approval before the digital release.

ZEE5 has not disputed the order publicly. Instead, it posted that the film remains “unavailable until further notice” while it explores “every appropriate avenue” to bring it back, and separately urged viewers not to support pirated copies circulating online.

Who Was Jaswant Singh Khalra?

Jaswant Singh Khalra was a Punjab-based human rights activist who investigated the alleged illegal cremation of thousands  of unidentified bodies during Punjab’s insurgency period between 1984 & 1994. His findings attracted international attention, including discussions in Canada’s House of Commons. Khalra was abducted outside his Amritsar residence in September 1995, and his body was never recovered. In later years, several Punjab Police personnel were convicted in connection with his abduction and murder. His life remains one of the most debated chapters in Punjab’s modern history making Satluj a politically and historically sensitive film.

What Is the Real Story Behind the Satluj Controversy?

The censorship fight predates the OTT release by 3 whole years. Satluj depicts the story of bank official-turned-activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who investigated the alleged illegal cremation of thousands of people during Punjab’s militancy years in the 1980s and 90s.

The makers first submitted the film to the CBFC in 2022 under the title Punjab ’95 to seek permission for a theatrical release, but rejected the board’s demand for roughly 127 cuts. According to Diljit, he had expected the film might be removed after offices reopened on Monday, but was surprised when it disappeared on Sunday evening itself. He thanked viewers who managed to watch the film during its brief availability and encouraged audiences to continue supporting the story through legitimate means wherever it remains legally available.

Following the takedown, Diljit Dosanjh urged fans to keep the film alive among audiences, while ZEE5 appealed to viewers not to support piracy and  reiterated that it was working through due process to bring Satluj back to Indian viewers.
