What Is Ramayana Part 1 Movie Really About?

Ramayana Part 1 is the first part of the two-part mythological epic movie series directed by Nitesh Tiwari. It is the adaptation of Maharishi Valmiki’s ancient Sanskrit text for a modern global audience.
The first instalment of the movie, Ramayana Part 1, will cover the life and tales of Prince Rama’s early life in Ayodhya, his marriage to Sita, and the palace/family politics that push him into 14 years of exile. Deeper into the forest, viewers shall also witness Sita’s abduction by Lanka’s demon king Ravana, which would set up the war that will continue in Part 2.
Unlike earlier small-screen adaptations, this Ramayana Part 1 film 2026 is built for the big screen. It is filmed in IMAX with sweeping VFX sequences matching global fantasy epics and the movie’s tone feels devotional yet cinematic.
From the initial looks, we are in for a mythological treat that promises to treat the source material with reverence while still delivering the story at an impressive scale.

Who Are The Ramayana Part 1 Cast Members?

The Ramayana Part 1 cast is like a dream team that has been assembled to build a story that promises literary precision and emotional accuracy expected by the audience.
  • Ranbir Kapoor is cast in the lead role of Lord Ram, delivering a restrained, dignified performance built more on presence than dialogue.
  • Sai Pallavi will be seen stepping into the role of Sita. She is expected to bring warmth and quiet strength to a character audiences have grown up worshipping.
  • Yash, fresh off his KGF fame, is taking on the role of Ravana, and early reactions suggest his screen presence alone could redefine the demon king’s portrayal.
  • Sunny Deol plays Hanuman, adding devotional muscle to the ensemble.
  • Ravi Dubey plays Lakshman
  • Rakul Preet Singh appears as Surpanakha.
  • Lara Dutta plays Kaikeyi while Sheeba Chaddha plays Manthara.
  • A veteran name like Arun Govil fills out the royal court with experience.
Together, the cast of Ramayana Part 1 blends mainstream stardom with performers who understand mythology’s emotional weight.

Who Directed Ramayana Part 1 And Scored Its Music?

Nitesh Tiwari, the filmmaker behind Dangal and Chhichhore, is the director of Ramayana Part 1. Meanwhile, the screenwriting duties belong to Shridhar Raghavan, tasked with translating Valmiki’s centuries-old verses into a screenplay that feels immediate rather than distant.
What truly sets this project apart, though, is its music. For the first time, two Oscar-winning composers, A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer, have joined forces on a single Indian film, splitting duties across songs and background score. The lyrics have been penned by poet Kumar Vishwas, while the music rights officially belong to T-Series for the movie.
Visual effects are handled by DNEG, the eight-time Oscar-winning studio behind Dune and Interstellar. Guy Norris, the mastermind behind the brilliance of Mad Max’s chase sequences, is handling the action and stunt direction for Ramayana, while Terry Notary, known for Avatar’s success, is handling the motion-capture and performance direction of the movie. Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal are joining the ensemble here as production designers.
On the distribution front, we have Dharma joining in the village that’s engaged in making the movie as the official distributors for North India, while Sony shall act as the global distributors for the movie.

Why Is Ramayana Part 1 Trailer Creating Such Buzz?

The buzz began the moment the first teaser from this Ranbir Kapoor new film dropped earlier this year, giving fans their very first look at Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram.  That short glimpse settled years of casting scepticism and confirmed the Ramayana Part 1 teaser release date as a genuine cultural moment.
Months later, on July 30, 2026, the full official trailer arrived, followed by an English-dubbed version on August 5 for international audiences via Sony Pictures.
Every Ramayana Part 1 trailer review on YouTube since then has praised its scale, its music and Yash’s brief but powerful entrance as Ravana.
Between festival premieres and non-stop online discussion, this film has managed something rare for Indian cinema, building month-after-month excitement without a single day in theatres yet.

What is the Scale of Ramayan’s Production?

As per the reports, Ramayana Part 1’s VFX count is more than 3,500 shots from DNEG. The number however has not been confirmed by the studio yet.
For context, this big number is roughly where James Cameron landed with his Avatar: Fire and Ash, and way beyond Avengers: Endgame‘s roughly 2,500 VFX shots, Infinity War‘s 2,623 VFX shots, or Zack Snyder’s Justice League which has approximately 2,800 such shots. It is only James Cameron’s last two Avatar movies that have ever broken the 3,000-shot mark for VFX effects. If the reports are true, Ramayana isn’t just playing in Marvel’s league, it’s actually chasing Cameron’s.
The budget story however is a bit messy. UK tax filings revealed that Jurassic World: Dominion is budgeted at $658.8 million, and has, thus, overtaken Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Ramayana Part 1 alone is reportedly over $100 million (approx ₹1000 crore), though producer Namit Malhotra says the full two-part saga will cross $500 million once Part 2 wraps.
Worth remembering: Adipurush promised similar grandeur in 2023 and got mocked for its VFX instead. Big numbers on paper haven’t guaranteed big numbers on screen, which is exactly why audiences will be watching this movie shot by shot with a skeptical mindset.

When Is The Ramayana Part 1 Release Date?

Sony Pictures has now locked the Ramayana Part 1 release date as November 6, 2026, timed with Diwali celebrations worldwide and releasing worldwide simultaneously across Hindi and multiple dubbed languages, including English.
On the budget front, no official figure has been announced, but trade estimates place Part 1 near ₹1000 crore, making it one of the costliest Indian productions ever attempted.
With premieres already generating word of mouth, advance booking is expected to open a few weeks before release, a window studios shall use to gauge early demand.

IBO’s Final Word

Ramayana Part 1 is not just another mythological retelling; it is a statement about how big, how global, and how emotionally resonant Indian cinema can be when its biggest names come together with genuine intent.
From Ranbir Kapoor’s quiet dignity as Ram to Yash’s commanding menace as Ravana, from Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman’s shared score, every element points toward a film built to be remembered, not just watched.
With the teaser and trailer already setting benchmarks and the release date locked for 6th November 2026, all that remains is the wait.  Whether it lives up to the weight of expectation will be answered soon, but few films have earned this much anticipation before a single ticket has gone on sale.
