District Collector Sumit Kumar on Saturday inaugurated a newly constructed girls’ hostel on the premises of B.S. Kannan Government High School and Junior College here. “It is a major step towards improving educational access for girl students from economically weaker sections in the region,” the Collector said.

Addressing a gathering of students, teachers, and alumni of Kannan High School, the Collector said that the hostel would provide safe and affordable accommodation for nearly 120 girl students, enabling them to pursue their studies without the burden of high living costs. “Many students from rural and low-income families are forced to spend significant amounts on rented accommodation, and the new facility will help ease that financial strain while ensuring a secure environment,” Mr. Sumit Kumar said.

Mr. Sumit Kumar said the hostel was built through the collective efforts of alumni, donors, and well-wishers committed to supporting education. “The availability of quality hostel facilities will encourage more parents to send their daughters for higher studies and contribute to higher enrolment in the institution. This could also contribute to checking the dropout rate,” he said.

Appealing to the former students to continue supporting the institution’s development initiatives, the Collector announced that a special plan worth ₹25 lakh had been prepared to upgrade the school’s sports infrastructure, including a running track, lighting and other facilities. “The hostel, constructed at a cost of about ₹1.10 crore, would help each student save an estimated ₹50,000 to ₹60,000 annually on accommodation and food expenses,” he said.
