Ajinkya Rahane announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Thursday, July 30, bringing an end to one of the most decorated careers in Indian cricket. While his emotional Instagram video primarily focused on his international journey, it also sparked confusion among fans over whether the veteran batter had retired only from international cricket or from the IPL as well.
The answer, however, appears to be clear. Based on Ajinkya Rahane’s own words in his retirement message, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain has also retired from the IPL and all other forms of cricket. That means KKR will have to appoint a new captain ahead of the next IPL season.

Although several fans initially believed Rahane had only stepped away from international cricket, his retirement statement strongly suggests that he has also ended his IPL career.
The biggest indication came when Ajinkya Rahane said: “Today, I feel the timing is right for me to move on and announce my retirement from international cricket and all formats.”
The phrase “all formats” makes it clear that his decision extends beyond representing India. If Rahane intended to continue playing franchise cricket, he would likely have limited the announcement to international cricket, as several players have done in the past.
Another line from his farewell message further reinforces that interpretation. While thanking those who had supported him throughout his career, Rahane specifically acknowledged every IPL franchise he represented.
“To the BCCI, the MCA, my teammates, my coaches, every IPL franchisee, to Radhika, my entire family, my friends and everyone who stood by me, thank you.”
By thanking every IPL franchise as part of his farewell speech, Ajinkya Rahane appeared to bid goodbye not only to international cricket but also to his IPL journey. With that, KKR are now expected to head into IPL 2027 with a new captain after Rahane led the side during the last couple of seasons.

With Ajinkya Rahane stepping away from the IPL, Rinku Singh has emerged as the strongest contender to take over the captaincy.
The left-handed batter is already the vice-captain of the franchise and has established himself as one of KKR’s most dependable performers over the last few seasons. Since making his IPL debut, Rinku has played 73 matches, scoring 1,394 runs at an average of 34.00 and an impressive strike rate of 145.96. His consistency has been particularly notable in pressure situations, making him one of the team’s most valuable finishers.
Rinku Singh also enjoyed another productive campaign in IPL 2026, scoring 295 runs in 14 matches at an average of 59.00, while maintaining a strike rate close to 149. His overall impact and growing leadership role within the squad make him the natural successor to Rahane.
Apart from Rinku Singh, Rovman Powell and Sunil Narine are the only other players in the current KKR squad with captaincy experience.
