When discussions revolve around the sharpest cricketing minds, former India captain MS Dhoni is almost always among the first names to surface. Widely admired for his calm demeanor, tactical awareness, and unmatched ability to stay composed under pressure, Dhoni has earned immense respect from players and experts across the globe.

He explained what, in his opinion, defines a true cricketing brain before revealing Nehra as his choice. According to Moeen, a great cricketing mind is someone who understands every situation in the game, anticipates what could unfold next, and backs every opinion with logic, evidence, or data rather than instinct alone.
Notably, the former England all-rounder spent time with Nehra during their stint together at Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where the ex-India pacer served as bowling coach. That experience, Moeen suggested, gave him a close look at Nehra’s detailed understanding of tactics, match-ups, and game management.
“A cricketing brain is somebody who knows every situation of the game and has an answer for every situation of the game. Just literally talks about all aspects of the game, like why somebody is not that good and why somebody is that good. Predicting what should or could happen in each situation. But there is something behind it, either data or some sort of evidence. The name I am going to give is Ashish Nehra. He worked two years for RCB when I was there and has an amazing cricket brain,” Moeen said.
Since moving into coaching, Nehra has established himself as one of the Indian Premier League‘s most respected strategists. He has been the head coach of Gujarat Titans since the franchise entered the IPL in 2022 and has enjoyed remarkable success. Under his guidance, Gujarat lifted the IPL trophy in their debut season and have since remained among the league’s strongest sides, finishing runners-up twice in five campaigns while consistently competing for playoff spots.

During the same discussion, England leg-spinner Adil Rashid also shared his pick for the sharpest cricketing brain, choosing former England captain Eoin Morgan. Morgan is widely credited with revolutionising England’s white-ball approach after their disappointing exit from the 2015 ODI World Cup. Under his leadership, England embraced an aggressive brand of cricket that transformed the team into one of the most feared limited-overs sides in the world.
