Wasim Jaffer on Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as India selector

Ajit Agarkar took charge as BCCI’s Chairman of the Senior Men’s Selection Committee on July 4, 2023, replacing Chetan Sharma. Since his appointment, India’s white-ball teams have delivered significant tournament success, winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 and 2026, along with the Champions Trophy in 2025. The team also reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup at home.

Wasim Jaffer, the former India opener, assessed Agarkar’s tenure ahead of India’s two-match away Test series against Sri Lanka, beginning August 15 in Galle. Jaffer acknowledged the tangible results achieved during this period and highlighted the dominance displayed in limited-overs cricket.

“I think if you talk about winning, then this tenure has been successful. You are known by your results, so I believe the trophies we have won speak for themselves. If we talk about the way the Indian team has played, especially in white-ball cricket, we have dominated.“If we leave out the 2023 World Cup final, India have won the Asia Cup, the Champions Trophy and then two T20 World Cups back-to-back.” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.

“So, India have dominated white-ball cricket. But we have that kind of talent, and we have dominated white-ball cricket. So, in terms of performances, you would count this stint as a successful stint,” he added.

Concerns over player handling and clarity

However, Jaffer raised significant concerns about how certain players have been managed and the reasoning behind specific selection decisions. He pointed to several cases where the handling of players and the selection process itself warranted scrutiny and discussion. These issues, according to Jaffer, represent debatable aspects of the tenure that cannot be overlooked despite the trophy wins.

“But the way some players have been handled and some of the selections that have been made are debatable, there is no doubt about that. There is Mohammed Shami, then Sarfaraz Khan, and we keep mentioning Abhimanyu Easwaran’s name, now Auqib Nabi, he wasn’t selected earlier and has now been selected as a replacement, these are all things that I feel can be discussed in a negative way. Why are these selections not happening, and why are players not getting clarity?,” Jaffer said.

Jaffer’s critique highlighted the lack of clarity provided to players regarding their selection prospects and the reasoning behind inclusion or exclusion decisions. The cases he mentioned span different phases of Agarkar’s tenure and involve players across formats. The former opener’s comments suggest that while trophy wins validate the selection committee’s overall direction, the process and communication surrounding individual player management remain open to debate.

India’s Test cricket performance during this period presents a contrasting picture to the white-ball success. The team failed to qualify for the 2025 World Test Championship final and suffered home series defeats against New Zealand in 2024 and South Africa in 2025. Agarkar’s contract was originally scheduled to end in June 2026 but was extended by three months, keeping him in the role through August 2026.
