Hardik to KKR Could Backfire Badly on Mumbai, Warns R Ashwin

(Disclaimer: The Cover Page Is AI Generated Image)

The Hardik Pandya trade has once again become one of the biggest talking points among IPL fans. Every few days, a different team is being linked with the Mumbai Indians all-rounder.

At one point, reports suggested that Chennai Super Kings could sacrifice some of their players to bring Hardik into their squad. Rajasthan Royals then entered the discussion, followed by Delhi Capitals.

However, the latest discussions have put Kolkata Knight Riders at the centre of the Hardik Pandya trade rumours.

A report claimed that KKR had offered Mumbai Indians a strong deal for Hardik and that it could be difficult for MI to turn it down. Since then, the possibility of Hardik joining KKR has created plenty of discussion.

Amid all these rumours, R Ashwin has now shared an interesting analysis of the situation.

R Ashwin Shares His View on Hardik Pandya Trade

According to Ashwin’s assessment, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders are the two teams that make the most sense if Hardik is eventually traded by Mumbai Indians.

He then looked at the possible deals involving CSK and KKR separately.

What Can CSK Offer Mumbai Indians for Hardik Pandya?

While discussing Chennai Super Kings, Ashwin suggested a possible deal involving Shivam Dube along with a bowler.

From Mumbai Indians’ point of view, such a package could potentially make sense because they would be getting more than one useful player in return for Hardik.

However, things become much more interesting when KKR enters the equation.

Cameron Green for Hardik Pandya?

Ashwin also discussed a possible scenario where KKR could offer Cameron Green as part of a deal to bring Hardik Pandya into their team.

However, there is an important question Mumbai Indians would need to consider before accepting such an offer.

What happens if Cameron Green does not play the next IPL season?

With major international assignments around the same period, his availability could become an important factor in any potential deal.

Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh Could Make the Deal Interesting

This is where Ashwin brought Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh into the discussion.

According to his analysis, if Mumbai Indians are going to send Hardik Pandya to KKR, they should look for a package that can immediately strengthen their own squad.

A combination involving Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh would certainly change the equation.

Rinku could strengthen Mumbai’s middle and lower-middle order, while Harshit would give them another quality Indian bowling allrounder which will increase their depth in batting and bowling both department.

If KKR were willing to offer a package of that level, Mumbai could at least have a strong cricketing reason to consider the Hardik trade.

Otherwise, giving Hardik to one of their direct IPL competitors could prove costly.

Mumbai Indians Will Also Think About the IPL Title Race

This was perhaps the most interesting part of Ashwin’s analysis.

Mumbai Indians would not only look at the players they are receiving in return. They would also have to think about how much stronger Hardik could make the opposition team.

CSK and MI are two of the most successful teams in IPL history with 5 IPL trophies each, while KKR have also been among the competition’s leading sides with 3 IPL trophies to their name.

So, from MI’s perspective, this is not simply a player-for-player calculation.

They also have to ask another question: How strong will the other team become after getting Hardik Pandya?

That could play a major role in their final decision.

Why Hardik Pandya Could Make KKR Extremely Strong

If Hardik joins Kolkata Knight Riders, their overall team balance could become even stronger.

For KKR, Hardik could be the solution to almost all of their weaknesses. After Andre Russell, they are lacking a quality all-rounder, and if they get an all-rounder of Hardik Pandya’s calibre, what more could they ask for?

They need a captain, and a IPL-winning leader, the answer is Hardik. They need a finisher, especially if they want to promote Rinku Singh up the order, and once again, Hardik fits that role perfectly.

KKR also need a leader in their pace attack who can bowl with the new ball as well as at the death. Hardik can give them that option too.

With the batting firepower of Finn Allen, Rovman Powell, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh already in the squad, KKR have plenty of attacking options. Add Hardik to that batting unit and combine it with a strong spin attack led by Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, and KKR could become an extremely difficult team to beat.

With this formidable team KKR will leapfrog MI in title winning race.

That is exactly where the concern for Mumbai Indians comes in. MI would not want to strengthen one area of their own squad while simultaneously making one of their biggest competitors much harder to beat.

Could Hardik Pandya Trade to KKR Be a Big Mistake for MI?

Ashwin’s analysis raises an important question for Mumbai Indians.

If Hardik Pandya goes to KKR without Mumbai getting enough quality in return, the move could hurt MI more than it helps them.

However, the equation changes if Mumbai can get players such as Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh in return. Such a package would immediately strengthen multiple areas of their squad and make the trade much more balanced.

A deal centred only around Cameron Green could be much more complicated, particularly if there are questions over his IPL availability.

That is why Mumbai Indians have to look beyond the name they receive in return.

They need to consider their squad balance, the availability of the incoming players and, most importantly, how much stronger KKR or CSK would become after getting Hardik.
