India’s Bowling Exposed by Sri Lanka Cricket XI? Big Warning Ahead of Test Series

The India vs Sri Lanka Test series has not even started yet, but the opening day of India’s warm-up match has already raised some questions over the visitors’ preparation.

Sri Lanka Cricket XI, featuring several players with no international experience, made India’s bowlers work extremely hard throughout the first day.

They finished Day 1 on 363/8 after 90 overs, and looking at the quality of bowling options India used, the score should certainly make the team management think.

Yes, this was only a warm-up match. However, when an inexperienced batting unit puts 363 runs on the board against a bowling attack featuring Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and several other options, there are areas India will want to improve before the Test series begins.

Sri Lanka Cricket XI Put India Under Pressure

When Sri Lanka Cricket XI’s team was announced for this warm-up fixture, it looked like India could dominate the contest.

There were several relatively inexperienced names in the Sri Lankan side, while India had plenty of quality bowling options available.

However, the first day went in a completely different direction.

Sri Lanka Cricket XI reached 363/8 in 90 overs. India did manage to fight back towards the end of the day, but for a major part of the innings, the hosts were in a very comfortable position.

If we have to pick a winner from Day 1 alone, Sri Lanka Cricket XI’s batters certainly had more reasons to be satisfied.

Nishan Madushka and Ravindu Rasantha Frustrate India

India had to work hard for almost every wicket.

Nishan Madushka gave Sri Lanka Cricket XI a quick start, scoring 66 from 65 deliveries before being run out.

Ravindu Rasantha, on the other hand, played a completely different type of innings. He showed patience and occupied the crease for a long time, scoring 71 from 143 balls.

The important thing was that contributions kept coming.

Pavan Rathnayake scored 39, while Pasindu Sooriyabandara contributed 35. Ahan Wickramasinghe made 31 before captain Sonal Dinusha added another important half-century.

Dinusha scored 52 from 71 deliveries and helped Sri Lanka Cricket XI remain in a strong position late in the day.

Almost every batter found a way to contribute, and that made life difficult for the Indian bowlers.

India Used Plenty of Bowling Options

One thing that makes this performance more interesting is the number of bowling options India had available.

This was a warm-up fixture, so India were not restricted to the same bowling combination they would normally use in a Test match.

Ravindra Jadeja bowled 15 overs, Kuldeep Yadav delivered 18, while Manav Suthar bowled 13 overs.

Saransh Jain also bowled 11 overs.

That means India were able to give a huge workload to their spin options and test different combinations.

In an actual Test match, however, India cannot simply play every spinner available in the squad. They will have to select a balanced attack depending on the conditions.

That is why the resistance shown by Sri Lanka Cricket XI is worth discussing.

Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna Go Wicketless

Another concern was the performance of India’s senior pace options.

Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna both went wicketless on the opening day.

Prasidh bowled eight overs and conceded 32 runs without taking a wicket.

It was only a warm-up match, and bowlers are also trying to find their rhythm rather than treating the game exactly like an international Test. Still, India would have expected their experienced pacers to trouble this Sri Lankan batting unit more consistently.

Gurnoor Brar was the only Indian seamer to pick up a wicket on Day 1.

With the Test series approaching, India will want their pace attack to find its rhythm quickly.

Why India’s Bowling Performance Raises Questions

There is an obvious counterargument here: it was only a warm-up match.

That is absolutely true.

Bowlers may not operate with the same intensity they would bring to an international Test match. The purpose of these fixtures is also to get overs under the belt, understand the conditions and prepare the body for a long series.

However, there is another side to the argument.

For a bowler, a warm-up game is an opportunity to find rhythm, understand the pitch and get used to the local conditions before the real contest begins.

India’s spinners bowled long spells on Day 1, so this was not a case of everyone bowling just a few overs.

That is why Sri Lanka Cricket XI reaching 363/8 deserves attention.

It does not mean India’s bowling attack has suddenly become weak. But it does suggest that the upcoming Test series may not be as straightforward as some might have expected.

Questions Over Not Giving Auqib A Single Over

One surprising part of the warm-up match was Aquib Nabi not getting an opportunity to bowl on Day 1.

In a practice game where India used several bowling options, it was surprising that Nabi did not get even a short spell.

Warm-up matches are generally the best opportunity to test players and understand what they can offer before the main series begins.

If a player is part of the setup, giving him a few overs can help the team management assess how he responds to the conditions.

However, the Indian team management gave opportunities to every bowler in the squad except Auqib Nabi Dar, which raised quite a few eyebrows.

India vs Sri Lanka Test Series May Be Tougher Than Expected

The biggest takeaway from Day 1 is simple: India cannot take the upcoming India vs Sri Lanka Test series lightly.

Sri Lanka’s less experienced batters have already shown that they can stay at the crease, handle India’s spinners and put pressure on the pace attack.

The actual Sri Lankan Test batting line-up will obviously present an even bigger challenge.

For India, this warm-up game is about preparation rather than the result. Therefore, there is still plenty of time to correct mistakes, identify the right bowling combination and understand how to operate on these surfaces.

But if Day 1 was supposed to provide India’s bowlers with an easy introduction to the tour, Sri Lanka Cricket XI had other ideas.

The hosts have given India an early warning. Now it is up to the Indian bowling unit to respond before the real Test cricket begins.
