Arun Singh Dhumal is all set to continue as the Chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council, with no major challenge expected in the upcoming BCCI elections.
The BCCI Electoral Officer AK Joti has issued the official election notice for two-member posts on the IPL Governing Council. The election will take place at the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 18. Earlier, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant among stars spotted during BCCI Fitness Tests.
Arun Dhumal, Khairul Jamal Majumdar set for re-election
Under Rule 28 of the BCCI Constitution, four members from the BCCI general body are part of the IPL Governing Council. Out of these four, two members are elected during the AGM.
The current elected members are Himachal Pradesh’s Arun Singh Dhumal, who is currently serving as the chairman, and Mizoram’s Khairul Jamal Majumdar.
As reported by Cricbuzz, Dhumal and Majumdar are both expected to be re-elected unopposed. According to the BCCI constitution, their term as elected IPL Governing Council members is only one year, so they have to go through the election process again.
The nomination process will take place on September 9 and 10. After the nominations are examined, the final list of candidates will be released on September 12.
Seven members make up the IPL Governing Council
The IPL GC has seven members in total. Apart from Dhumal and Majumdar, the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and treasurer Raghuram Bhat are two general body members of the seven-member Indian Premier League Governing Council.
The remaining three members are the BCCI CEO, an Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA) representative, and a CAG nominee. The latest election notification is only for the two IPL Governing Council member positions.
This means there is no surprise election expected for any other BCCI post. The current BCCI office-bearers are expected to continue in their respective positions. Amid this, Tilak Varma emerges as Shreyas Iyer’s replacement for 2027 World Cup.
AGM electoral roll process underway
The BCCI has also asked its full members to submit applications for including their representatives in the electoral roll for the elections. The representatives of the state cricket associations who attend the AGM will form the electoral roll.
The state associations started the process of nominating their AGM representatives on August 25, while August 31 is the deadline for submitting the names. After the BCCI examines any objections and takes decisions on them, the final electoral roll will be released on September 8.
Meanwhile, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is likely to send a team to inspect the Japan venue before the Asia Cup begins on September 17 after the BCCI and the PCB raised concerns over the pitch quality and the lack of proper dressing rooms for the players.
Player accommodation is another issue. The cricketers are expected to stay around 20 kilometers away from Korogi Sports Park. There are also reports that players may have to stay in shared rooms, which could create space problems for them and their cricket equipment.
