The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sought detailed feedback from all 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises on the controversial Impact Player rule. Notably, the Indian board has set Monday, August 31, as the deadline for teams to submit their feedback ahead of the next IPL season.
Introduced in the 2023 season, the rule allows teams to replace one player from their starting XI during a match, effectively creating a 12-player system. The Impact Player rule has come under renewed scrutiny in recent IPL seasons, with debates continuing over its impact on the balance between bat and ball.
BCCI Seeks IPL Franchises’ Feedback on Impact Player Rule
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI’s communication covers several cricket operations matters, with the Impact Player rule emerging as the most significant issue. The franchises have been asked to submit their consolidated feedback by Monday, August 31, ahead of the next IPL season.
Notably, the board has also asked teams to share their views on umpiring, practice sessions, playing conditions, and Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) matters. The BCCI’s communication, accessed by Cricbuzz, stated:
“As discussed in the IPL 2026 Captains’ Meeting, it was agreed that feedback would be collected from all franchises at the conclusion of the tournament on key cricket operations matters. Accordingly, we request you to discuss the following areas with your Cricket Operations teams and share your consolidated feedback with us.”
The board added:
“Kindly ensure that your feedback reaches us by 31 August. This will help us compile inputs from all franchises and take forward the necessary review and action points ahead of the next season. We look forward to your response within the stipulated timeline.”
Impact Player Rule Faces Fresh Review Ahead of IPL 2027
The Impact Player rule allows a team to replace one player from its starting XI during a match. The incoming player can bat and bowl, giving franchises an additional tactical option during a game.
The rule has divided opinion among players and teams. Several prominent Indian cricketers, including Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and Shubman Gill, have opposed it.
The latest BCCI request is notable because the rule was previously expected to continue for at least another season. The board’s decision to seek specific feedback from franchises now could lead to a review before IPL 2027.
However, the Impact Player rule has also received support within the league. The feedback from the franchises could help the BCCI determine whether the rule needs changes or should continue in its current form. No final decision has been announced on its future.
Devajit Saikia Had Promised Review of Impact Player Rule
In May, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said that the board would review the Impact Player rule after the IPL 2026 season. Saikia had also defended the rule while discussing concerns over the number of high-scoring matches in the tournament.
“Some low-scoring matches are also there. All the fans are enjoying the matches. The bowlers are getting good wickets as well. Everything is happening; it is a full bouquet in one package.”
The Impact Player rule remains the biggest talking point in the feedback exercise. The rule has faced criticism in recent seasons, particularly after several high-scoring matches raised renewed concerns about the balance between bat and ball.
