Gurnoor Brar produced a moment of pure fast-bowling quality during the Duleep Trophy 2026 semi-final, beating Narayan Jagadeesan all ends up with a late-swinging delivery that crashed into the off stump.
The contest between North Zone and South Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence witnessed several intriguing moments, but Brar’s dismissal of Jagadeesan stood out. The young pacer showcased his ability to generate movement off the surface and through the air, leaving the experienced South Zone batter with virtually no answer.

North Zone were asked to bat first and managed to post 195 runs, with Qamran Iqbal leading the scoring with an impressive 76. South Zone, however, found themselves in trouble early in their reply as North Zone’s new-ball attack applied immediate pressure.
Ricky Bhui and Shaik Rasheed were both dismissed for single-digit scores, leaving South Zone struggling at 39/2. Jagadeesan provided some much-needed stability, battling through the difficult phase to score a determined 36.
Just when the wicketkeeper-batter appeared settled, Brar produced something special. In the 20th over, the right-arm seamer operated from wide of the crease and delivered a good-length ball around middle stump. The delivery initially appeared to be heading towards the batter’s body, but it moved late in the air and completely changed the equation.
Jagadeesan moved forward expecting to meet the ball on its original line. Instead, the late movement took the ball past his outside edge before it crashed into the off stump. The timber was sent flying, leaving Jagadeesan visibly beaten by a delivery that offered almost no room for error.

Could Brar be India’s next pace option?
The dismissal was another reminder of why Brar is increasingly being viewed as an exciting prospect for India’s red-ball setup. His ability to combine genuine pace with movement makes him an awkward proposition for batters, particularly with the new ball. Brar was brought into the North Zone squad for the semi-final after returning from the Sri Lanka series. Although he is still waiting for his Test debut, his inclusion in India’s recent Test squads suggests that the selectors see him as someone who could develop into a long-term option in the format.
His domestic numbers further strengthen that case. In 19 first-class appearances, Brar has collected 62 wickets at an average of 25.24, including two five-wicket hauls. Those figures, coupled with his pace and physical attributes, have helped him attract attention from the national selectors.
India’s fast-bowling resources remain formidable, but workload and fitness concerns surrounding key pacers have made the development of reliable backups increasingly important. Brar’s progress could therefore prove significant. Rather than rushing him into international cricket, the selectors appear to be giving him exposure to higher-level domestic and India A environments while allowing him to build experience.
If he continues producing deliveries like the one that dismantled Jagadeesan, Brar may not have to wait too long for his opportunity. The Duleep Trophy semi-final offered another compelling glimpse of the raw ability that could eventually make him part of India’s Test plans.
