At least 22 people were killed when a bus overturned in Egypt on Wednesday, the country’s health ministry said.
The bus was traveling between Dahab and Nuweiba, popular Red Sea resort towns in the Sinai Peninsula on the Gulf of Aqaba.
Another 28 people were injured in the crash, Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, a spokesman for the ministry, said in a statement. Emergency services sent 20 ambulances to the scene. The injured passengers were taken to three hospitals in the region, the ministry said.
The ministry did not release any details about the nationalities of those killed or injured, and the cause was not immediately clear. However, a number of Jordanians were among the casualties, Jordan’s foreign ministry said.
The crash adds to the list of fatal bus accidents in Egypt. Last month, a crash in Ismailia, in northeastern Egypt, killed 18 people and injured about 30 others, according to reports in Ahram, a state-affiliated news outlet. In 2023, at least 32 people were killed and another 63 injured when a bus and several vehicles collided north of Cairo.
In 2025, Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics recorded 5,829 road accident fatalities, an increase of more than 10 percent from the previous year. The statistics agency recorded 84,553 road accident injuries in the same year, a figure which has steadily increased since 2021.
