Red as a mid-cycle release
Apple has never released a red standard-bearer iPhone turned on the first day.
The first red iPhone arrived as a mid-cycle release version of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. You can buy the newest iPhone in red, but not in the first six months of this model’s availability.
Apple repeated this a year later. A red version of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus was released a few months after the original launch, and those models were already “old” compared to the iPhone X sold during the same cycle.
There is no red pro yet
Apple started selling red iPhone models on day one with the iPhone XR through the iPhone 14, and there have been red iPhone SE models, but no red version of the iPhone XS through the iPhone 14 Pro.
Pro models have had more serious shades – not that red isn’t a very serious color. The choice was between better specs or a cool red iPhone.
This choice changed, of course, with wonderful Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro.
Now we just hope that Apple will indulge us with another vibrant shade some fun colors AND not something very deep.
The iPhone 18 Pro could finally give new early adopters the chance to own a cool red iPhone from day one.
