AFG vs IND [WATCH]: Varun Chakaravarthy cleans up Darwish Rasooli with a ripper in first T20I

India and Afghanistan are locking horns in the opening T20I of their series, with both sides looking to begin the contest on a strong note. After being asked to bat first, Afghanistan faced an early setback as India’s bowling attack applied relentless pressure during the powerplay. Amid the hosts’ struggles, Indian bowlers continued to create problems for the Afghan batters, with Varun Chakaravarthy producing one of the standout moments of the innings.

Varun Chakaravarthy dismisses Darwish Rasooli in the first T20I

Chakaravarthy delivered a moment of magic during Afghanistan’s innings in the first T20I against India, producing a sharp, skidding delivery to bowl Darwish Rasooli on the final ball of the seventh over. The mystery spinner’s clever variation completely deceived the Afghan batter, who had no answer to the ball as it crashed into his leg stump.

The dismissal came at a crucial stage of the innings, with Afghanistan already under enormous pressure after losing half of their side inside the first seven overs. Chakaravarthy’s delivery was quick through the surface and came sharply into Rasooli, making it extremely difficult for the batter to adjust. As he attempted to bring the bat down, he was already too late. The ball came in sharply, sneaked past the inside edge and went on to uproot the leg stump.

Azmatullah Omarzai rescue Afghanistan after Indian bowlers’ sizzling show

The wicket was another highlight of an outstanding bowling performance from India after captain Shreyas Iyer opted to field first following the toss. Arshdeep Singh led the charge with the new ball, ripping through Afghanistan’s top order with an impressive spell. The left-arm pacer finished with figures of 3/19 from his four overs, ensuring the hosts struggled to establish any momentum during the early stages.

Jasprit Bumrah, returning to the Indian attack, also played his part by claiming a wicket while conceding just 26 runs. Chakaravarthy complemented the pace attack superbly, using his variations to keep Afghanistan’s batters guessing. By the end of the seventh over, Afghanistan had slumped to 43/5 and appeared destined for a severely below-par total.

Just when Afghanistan appeared to be heading towards a complete collapse, Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi launched a crucial recovery effort. Nabi provided stability in the middle order, scoring a valuable 33 from 27 deliveries. At the other end, Omarzai adopted a more aggressive approach and put pressure back on the Indian bowlers. Even after Nabi departed, Omarzai remained composed and continued attacking. His unbeaten 64 off 44 balls featured four boundaries and four sixes, allowing Afghanistan to recover significantly from their disastrous start. His late fireworks helped Afghanistan finish their 20 overs at 156/8, giving the side a fighting total despite India’s bowlers having dominated for much of the innings.
