The next players’ auction for the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) is likely to be held in India. In the previous three seasons, the players’ auctions were held in different venues abroad, such as Abu Dhabi, Jeddah, and Dubai. The previous mega auction was held in Jeddah. This year, the auction is set to be held in India, only if the selected venue can meet all the criteria for arranging an IPL players’ auction.
Arun Dhumal, who is set to be re-elected as the Indian Premier League chairman during the BCCI AGM on September 18, told the news agency PTI on September 16 that they are keen to host the 2027 auction in India. But there are some practical challenges that need to be solved before confirming the venue.
Arun Dhumal is keen to host IPL 2027 player’s auction in India
Speaking to PTI, Arun Dhumal stated that every year they tried to arrange the event in India. But the October – December period is basically the wedding season in India. During the wedding season, it became very hard for the organisers to ensure all of the massive arrangements to host an auction.
This year, the board and the organisers of the Indian Premier League are expecting to do their best to find a suitable place in India for the 2027 players’ auction, which will be a mini auction.
“Every year we try for this to happen in India, but we don’t get the venue given the heavy marriage season. So, we definitely want it to be here this year, given that it would be a smaller auction and hopefully we will get the venue,” Arun Dhumal said.
What are the basic requirements to host an IPL auction?
Today (September 16) morning, Cricbuzz, in one of its reports, mentioned that to arrange an IPL players’ auction, the organisers will have to book more than a hundred rooms for a couple of days. The bookings must be in a five-star hotel. In the middle of the wedding season, finding more than a hundred rooms in a five-star hotel is going to be a very difficult task for them.
But why are they willing to bring back the auction in India again? This is mostly because of logistical reasons. Franchises are reportedly not eager to invest heavily only for a mini auction.
Arranging an auction outside of India means the franchises will have to send their delegates abroad to take part in it. Sending deligates out side India will be a costly thing for every franchise. As the upcoming players’ auction is going to be a mini auction, the franchises want to invest more sensibly.
Arun Dhumal on the Impact Player rule
Alongside selecting the venue, the league officials will have to take a final call on the controversial Impact Player rule. Multiple players and franchises are not in support of the rule. The officials are expected to hold another meeting ahead of the next IPL season to decide what to do with the rule.
“The matter is under discussion. Will take feedback from all the stakeholders and then take a call on this,” Arun Dhumal added.
