The young prodigy of Chennai Super Kings, Ayush Mhatre, is yet to recover from the injury that ruled him out of the remainder of IPL 2026. Because of the same injury, the batter is likely to miss the upcoming season of the Irani Cup.
Times of India reporter Gaurav Gupta shared the latest updates on Mhatre through his social media post. The journalist mentioned in his ‘X’ post that Ayush Mhatre is to miss the Irani Cup as he is still training to regain his full match fitness; the batter is yet to give him the green signal.

Without the nod from the board’s medical team, Mhatre is not allowed to take part in any competitive matches. The social media post further mentioned that the middle-order batter has begun batting in the indoor nets in Mumbai.
“Mumbai opener Ayush Mhatre to miss #IraniCup as he has still not received clearance from BCCI CoE; he has started batting in the indoor nets at MCA BKC in Mumbai,” the social media post reads.
Ayush Mhatre received the injury during an Indian Premier League match in 2026. He received a hamstring injury in his left leg during a match between the Chennai Super Kings and the Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18, 2026. Since April 18, the teenage batter has remained out of action.

Ayush Mhatre’s injury is a massive blow
Only a few days ago, it was reported online that Ayush Mhatre has started batting for the first time after sustaining the injury during the Indian Premier League 2026 season.
Ayush’s injury was not only a massive blow for the Chennai Super Kings, but also for the Mumbai state cricket team, as the 19-year-old is considered one of the young breakout talents from the grassroots level. He was the skipper of the India U-19 national side as well, who led the team to win the U-19 World Cup.
Without Ayush Mhatre in the side, Super Kings suffered another season without qualifying for the play-offs. According to the latest updates, Ayush has started batting, but his return timeline is yet to be confirmed.
Irani Cup 2026-27 to begin on October 1
The Irani Cup for the 2026-27 season is scheduled to take place from October 1 to October 5, 2026, featuring Jammu and Kashmir against the Rest of India in Srinagar. Jammu and Kashmir was the champion of the previous Ranji Trophy season.
Squads of both of the teams for the Irani Cup are expected to be announced soon, as there are only a couple of days before the scheduled first day of the multi-day match. Ayush Mhatre was expected to be in the squad of the Rest of India team, but if the claims are to be believed, then he is not going to feature in the match.
