A major leadership transition is brewing within Indian cricket governance as Ajit Agarkar approaches the end of his tenure as the chairman of the senior men’s selection committee. With his initial term expiring in October, reports indicate that Agarkar is not seeking an extension and both parties are aligned on moving forward. The development has triggered intense discussions regarding who will step up to fill one of the most demanding roles in Indian cricket.
Agarkar took over the selection helm in July 2023, steering the squad through a critical transitional phase that included reaching the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup and lifting the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. Having recently overseen squad selections for upcoming white-ball commitments, the former India pacer appears set to pass on the baton, opening the door for new leadership.

The appointment dynamics within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are closely tied to constitutional precedence. According to established guidelines, the selector possessing the most Test appearances among the five-member committee serves as its chairman.
Parthiv represented India in 25 Test matches during his international career, while Ojha featured in 24 Tests. If Parthiv is formally inducted to fill the vacant West Zone slot, his 25 Test caps would make him the senior-most cricketer on the panel, edging out existing members and automatically qualifying him for the chief selector’s post.
