The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 player auction is scheduled to take place in the second week of December 2026, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) exploring venues in India to host the event. It will be the final mini-auction of the 2023-27 cycle ahead of the IPL’s 20th season.
The auction will return to India after three consecutive editions were held overseas in Dubai, Jeddah, and Abu Dhabi. Notably, the last auction hosted in India took place in Kochi ahead of IPL 2023. Franchises are seeking a return to domestic venues to avoid the logistical challenges of international travel.
IPL 2027 Auction Returns to India After Franchise Requests
The Indian Premier League 2027 player auction is set to take place in the second week of December 2026, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) preparing to bring the event back to India.
While the BCCI has decided to bring the auction back to India, it has not finalised the host city. The timing of the event in December coincides with the peak wedding season across several major Indian cities.
Notably, the BCCI needs more than 100 hotel rooms to accommodate franchise officials, support staff and other members of the delegations. The board is also assessing conference facilities, security arrangements and flight connectivity before selecting the venue.
Notably, the auction will also be important for franchises because player releases and retentions will determine their requirements. Teams will use the mini-auction to address specific weaknesses and add players to targeted positions.
IPL 2027 Impact Player Rule Decision and 20th Anniversary Plans
The future of the Impact Player rule remains a major issue ahead of IPL 2027. Notably, the IPL Governing Council discussed the regulation but did not reach a final decision, with another meeting expected before the BCCI makes a call.
Reports suggest that several franchises want the rule to continue for at least one more season, while most teams are understood to be against retaining it. Teams have built their current squads with the Impact Player rule in mind, so an immediate change could affect their planning for the upcoming season.
The 2027 edition will also mark the IPL’s 20th anniversary since the tournament began in 2008. The BCCI is planning celebrations to mark two decades of the league, while its centenary celebrations will begin in December 2027 and continue for a year.
Ajit Agarkar Set to Leave Chief Selector Role as BCCI Weighs Successor
Meanwhile, chief selector Ajit Agarkar has decided not to seek an extension when his current contract expires on October 4. Agarkar, who took charge of the senior selection committee in July 2023, has already communicated his decision to the BCCI.
During his tenure, India won the 2023 and 2025 Asia Cups, the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy, while also reaching the 2023 ODI World Cup final. His selection panel also oversaw Shubman Gill’s appointment as India’s Test and ODI captain and Shreyas Iyer’s elevation as T20I captain.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board still had time to decide Agarkar’s successor. “We still have 15 days to go. Fifteen days is a long time in the world of cricket. We will make a decision at an appropriate time,” Saikia said after the BCCI’s AGM.
India are scheduled to tour New Zealand from mid-October, with the series featuring five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests. India A will also play two unofficial Tests in New Zealand ahead of the senior team’s tour.
