Zaheer Khan has opened up about how he became the new Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season, revealing that the process was much more straightforward than many might have expected.
The former India fast bowler was appointed to replace Stephen Fleming, who ended his long association with CSK after the 2026 season. Zaheer’s appointment marked a major change for the five-time IPL champions, but the new coach has revealed that accepting the opportunity did not require a complicated conversation.

Speaking about his appointment, Zaheer explained that the franchise’s approach was direct. MS Dhoni, CSK’s long-time leader, was involved in discussions alongside the franchise’s management.
Zaheer said the conversation with CSK officials was essentially about his availability and willingness to take up the position.
“The procedure was very simple, straightforward. I would say in typical CSK fashion.”
He revealed that Rupa Gurunath and CEO Kasi Viswanathan spoke with him before the formalities were completed. Zaheer added that once CSK established that he was available, he was happy to accept the opportunity.
The former India pacer described the opportunity as both a privilege and an honour, underlining the significance of joining a franchise with such an established IPL identity.
One of the most notable aspects of Zaheer’s revelation was his mention of Dhoni’s influence in the process.
Zaheer acknowledged that Dhoni has been a major force within CSK and has played an important role in understanding the team’s direction. His existing relationship with Dhoni also adds an interesting dimension to Zaheer’s arrival in Chennai.
Dhoni and Zaheer were teammates for India and were key members of the squad that won the 2011 ODI World Cup.
Zaheer said Dhoni’s guidance would remain important as CSK move into a new phase under his leadership.
Why Zaheer Khan was chosen for IPL 2027?
Zaheer is taking charge of CSK after building experience in different franchise roles.
He previously worked with Mumbai Indians (MI), first as Director of Cricket Operations and later as Global Head of Cricket Development. He subsequently joined Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as a mentor, giving him experience in player development and franchise strategy.
The CSK position, however, represents his first head-coaching assignment in the IPL.
Zaheer also brings an impressive playing background. He represented India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is, while taking 102 wickets in 100 IPL appearances. He was also one of India’s leading wicket-takers during the country’s 2011 World Cup triumph.

Zaheer aware of the responsibility at CSK
While the appointment came through a simple conversation, Zaheer knows that the job itself will be anything but simple.
CSK have a huge following and a well-established cricketing culture. Zaheer acknowledged the pressure that comes with taking charge of such a prominent franchise.
“It always feels very satisfying and a lot of pressure as well at the same time because of the responsibilities I will be carrying.”
He also described the challenge of succeeding Fleming as exciting, given the New Zealander’s lengthy association with CSK.
Zaheer’s immediate focus will be on preparations for IPL 2027, including squad planning ahead of the upcoming mini-auction.
CSK have entered a new phase after several difficult seasons, and the franchise will now look to combine its experienced core with emerging players. Zaheer’s background in player development could become particularly relevant as the team works on its next squad.
The IPL 2027 auction is expected to be held in Goa in December 2026, giving Zaheer and the CSK management team an important opportunity to shape the squad for his first season in charge.
