The Khairatabad Assembly seat in Telangana fell vacant after the State Legislative Assembly Secretariat issued a notification on Monday (September 28, 2026)
The Telangana Legislative Assembly Secretariat has formally notified the disqualification of Danam Nagender as the member elected from the Khairatabad Assembly constituency, paving the way for a by-election to the seat.
The formal notification on Monday (September 28, 2026) follows the Telangana High Court’s order on September 18 disqualifying Mr. Nagender under the anti-defection provisions. He was disqualified on the grounds that despite being an MLA elected on behalf of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), he contested as a Congress candidate in the Parliament elections for the Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat.
The High Court held that his disqualification took effect from April 23, 2024, when he filed the nomination for the Secunderabad seat. Mr. Nagender challenged the High Court’s decision in the Supreme Court, which refused to provide any relief to him, leaving the disqualification in force.
Following the notification on Monday, the Khairatabad constituency is now officially vacant and will require a fresh election. The schedule for the by-election will be announced by the Election Commission.
