The 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) 2026 proved to be an emotional and huge event for the Indian film industry. While the Manipuri film Boong made headlines by winning the Best Children’s and Family Film award, it was the tribute to late Dharmendra that touched hearts across the globe.
Dharmendra was featured in the prestigious In Memoriam segment of the ceremony, alongside international icons like Diane Keaton, Brigitte Bardot, and Gene Hackman. Reacting to this global recognition, his wife, Hema Malini, shared her thoughts on the tribute and opened up about her life since his passing.

In a conversation Variety India, Hema Malini expressed how heartening it was to see Dharmendra being remembered on such a grand stage. Highlighting his international appeal, she said, “He was someone whose presence went beyond borders. He had fans in every part of the world. My God, the way he would be mobbed in foreign countries.”
Talking about their decades-long journey together, Hema Malini recalled how they managed to balance their professional and personal lives. She revealed that while they did not travel together much, their work often brought them close. She shared, “We would sign lots of films together so we could spend time together.”
Hema Malini also spoke candidly about the void left by his absence. Dharmendra passed away on November 24, 2025, at his residence in Mumbai, after a brief period of health complications. She admitted, “I miss him every single minute. I keep asking myself, is he really gone? When will I meet him again?”
Apart from the tribute to Dharmendra, the 2026 BAFTAs featured several Indian milestones, including Alia Bhatt presenting an award in Hindi. In other news, after Dharmendra’s demise, Hema Malini had also taken the opportunity to dismiss rumours of a rift with Sunny Deol’s family, showcasing family unity as Esha Deol was recently seen supporting Sunny at the film screening of Border 2.
