Harmanpreet Kaur, India’s World Cup-winning captain, has stepped down from captaincy across all formats, and the timing of her decision has surprised many. It is not because she has decided to leave the leadership role, but because she had better opportunities in the recent past to end her captaincy on a perfect note.
On November 2, 2025, Harmanpreet and her team created history by winning India’s first ICC Women’s World Cup title. It was one of the biggest moments in Indian women’s cricket. The entire country was celebrating the achievement, and Harmanpreet had reached the highest point of her captaincy career.
If Harmanpreet had to leave captaincy within the next year, that was perhaps the best possible time to do it. Stepping down just after lifting the World Cup would have been a memorable way to end her captaincy journey. She would have walked away at the absolute peak, and that decision itself could have become a special part of her legacy.
However, Harmanpreet decided to continue.
Then came the 2026 T20 World Cup, where India had a disappointing campaign and failed to progress beyond the group stage. That was another natural opportunity for Harmanpreet to step down. She could have taken responsibility for the team’s poor campaign and allowed a new captain to take charge.
But once again, she continued as captain.
India then went to the Asian Games under Harmanpreet and returned with another gold medal. After continuing through the high of the 2025 World Cup and the disappointment of the 2026 T20 World Cup, stepping down immediately after the Asian Games is difficult to understand.
If Harmanpreet wanted to leave after winning a major tournament, the 2025 World Cup was surely the perfect stage. And if she decided to continue beyond that historic achievement and also stayed after the T20 World Cup failure, there was a strong case for her to continue until the next World Cup.
There may also be questions over whether the decision was completely her own or whether there was any pressure behind it. Unless Harmanpreet or the BCCI confirms something, that should remain only a question and not be treated as a fact.
Whatever the reason, Harmanpreet Kaur’s legacy as captain will not change. She will always be remembered as the woman who led India to its first Women’s ODI World Cup title.
Still, the timing of her exit will remain a point of discussion. If Harmanpreet had to give up captaincy so soon after becoming a world champion, walking away with the World Cup trophy in her hands would have been the perfect ending — leaving the leadership at its absolute peak and creating a farewell that Indian cricket fans would have remembered forever.
