Big Blow for Australia as Their Backbone Is Ruled Out of 1st Test Against South Africa

Australia have suffered a major blow ahead of the Test series against South Africa, with star all-rounder Cameron Green is ruled out of the opening Test in Durban due to an abdominal injury.

Green suffered a lower abdominal strain while batting in the third ODI against South Africa and has remained doubtful for the Test series since then.

Green’s absence would be a big loss for Australia, especially considering the importance of this series in the World Test Championship. Australia are currently leading the WTC standings, while defending champions South Africa are second, making this three-match series important for both teams in the race for the 2027 WTC Final.+

Green has also been an important part of Australia’s batting unit, and losing him just before such an important series creates a selection problem for the visitors.

Who Can Replace Cameron Green?

Australia have already added Nic Maddinson to the squad as injury cover. However, that does not guarantee Maddinson a direct place in the playing XI.

Cooper Connolly and M Neser are another option available to Australia. Their all-round ability could work in their favour if the management wants a player who can contribute with both bat and ball.

However, Australia already have Beau Webster as an all-round option in their Test setup. That gives the management the freedom to replace Green with a specialist batter rather than another all-rounder.

The final decision could therefore come down to what Australia want from their playing XI — a proper batter in Maddinson or the additional all-round ability offered by Connolly.

Australia vs South Africa Test Series Schedule

1st Test: October 9-13, 2026 — Kingsmead, Durban

2nd Test: October 18-22, 2026 — St George’s Park, Gqeberha

3rd Test: October 27-31, 2026 — Newlands, Cape Town

Australia Squad for South Africa Test Series

Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Michael Neser, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster.

Added as cover: Nic Maddinson and Sam Harper.

Green is dealing with an abdominal strain, while Josh Inglis has been ruled out of the first Test with a fractured right index finger.

South Africa Squad for Australia Test Series

Temba Bavuma (c), Marques Ackerman, David Bedingham, Corbin Bosch, Gerald Coetzee, Tony de Zorzi, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Anrich Nortje, Dane Paterson, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne.

South Africa have named an extended preliminary squad, with Kagiso Rabada included despite recovering from a hamstring injury. His availability for the opening Test will be decided closer to the match.

For Australia, however, Green’s expected absence creates an important selection call before the first Test. With Maddinson and Connolly both available and Webster already providing an all-round option, Australia have different ways to balance their playing XI.

But whichever way they go, replacing an in-form player like Cameron Green will not be easy in such an important World Test Championship series.
