Team India have officially announced their squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, and the biggest news is the stunning return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
The 36-year-old veteran is back in India’s senior T20I squad after nearly four years. His previous appearance for India came in November 2022.
For a player whose international career appeared to be over despite consistently performing in the IPL, this is a massive comeback.
Bhuvneshwar had been knocking on the selectors’ door through his performances, and India have finally gone back to one of their most experienced T20 bowlers.
Shreyas Iyer will continue to captain the side, while Tilak Varma has been named vice-captain. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi retains his place, while Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson are the two wicketkeeping options.
Team India Squad for New Zealand T20I Series
Shreyas Iyer (C), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (WK), Tilak Varma (VC), Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar Finally Gets the Comeback He Deserved
Bhuvneshwar’s return should not be viewed as a selection based on reputation.
He has earned it through performance.
In IPL 2026, Bhuvneshwar took 28 wickets from 16 matches at an economy rate of only 7.95. He finished as the second-highest wicket-taker, just one wicket behind Kagiso Rabada, who took 29 wickets in 17 matches.
But wickets tell only part of the story.
Bhuvneshwar’s control separated him from the other leading wicket-takers. In a tournament where attacking batting made life extremely difficult for bowlers, he managed to keep his economy below eight.
That is an exceptional achievement in modern T20 cricket.
He was also a major contributor to Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s success and proved that age has not taken away the qualities that made him one of India’s finest white-ball fast bowlers.
This is why questions were repeatedly being asked about his continued absence from the national side.
Now, finally, those performances have been rewarded.
Bhuvi Becomes Even More Important Without Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah is not part of India’s T20I squad for the New Zealand tour, with the premier pacer being rested.
That makes Bhuvneshwar’s return even more important.
In Bumrah’s absence, India need an experienced fast bowler who can take responsibility in the most difficult phases of a T20 innings.
Bhuvneshwar remains arguably India’s best specialist new-ball bowler.
When the ball is moving, very few Indian pacers can match his control over swing, line and length. He does not need extreme pace to trouble batters because his biggest weapon has always been his ability to make the new ball move while maintaining control.
But he is not limited to the powerplay.
After Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar remains one of India’s strongest death-bowling options. His yorkers, slower deliveries and years of experience give India something they badly need when Bumrah is unavailable.
That combination makes him capable of leading this pace attack.
Alongside Bhuvi, India have Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav as their specialist pace options, with Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy providing additional bowling depth.
New Zealand Conditions Could Make Bhuvi Even More Dangerous
There could hardly be a more suitable place for Bhuvneshwar to make his international comeback than New Zealand.
If the pitches and overhead conditions provide movement, Bhuvi can become extremely dangerous with the new ball.
India can use him aggressively in the powerplay and then save his remaining overs for the death.
His IPL numbers also show that he does not have to depend completely on helpful conditions. Taking 28 wickets while conceding fewer than eight runs per over demonstrates the control he still possesses.
The five-match series gives India enough time to properly assess whether Bhuvneshwar can again become a regular part of their T20 setup.
If Bhuvi continues producing the performances that earned him this recall, there is no reason his international return should be limited to just one series.
India vs New Zealand T20I Schedule
India will play all five T20Is between October 22 and November 1.
1st T20I: October 22 — Christchurch
2nd T20I: October 24 — Christchurch
3rd T20I: October 27 — Wellington
4th T20I: October 30 — Auckland
5th T20I: November 1 — Hamilton
Bhuvneshwar’s comeback is easily the biggest story from this squad.
A bowler many believed might never play for India again has forced his way back through performance. With Bumrah absent and New Zealand potentially offering movement for the pacers, Bhuvneshwar now has an excellent opportunity to show why his international career may still have plenty left in it.
