The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally begun the process to find Ajit Agarkar’s successor on the men’s senior selection committee, inviting applications for one vacancy on Tuesday, two days after the former India pacer’s contract expired.
The appointment will assume significance with the new selector expected to join a four-member panel that is already functioning without Agarkar. Pragyan Ojha, who has the most Test appearances among the remaining members, has been asked to chair the committee in the interim.
The BCCI, in its media advisory, said the new member would be responsible for selecting the senior men’s team across formats, identifying talent and developing bench strength.
The appointment could also offer an indication of whether the BCCI intends to retain the convention of having Agarkar’s replacement from the West Zone. Agarkar, who took over as chairman in July 2023, was the panel’s most experienced Test player.
The board has stipulated that applicants must have played at least seven Tests, or 30 First Class matches, or 10 ODIs and 20 First Class matches. Candidates must have retired at least five years ago, while anyone who has served on a BCCI Cricket Committee for a cumulative five years will be ineligible.
The deadline for submitting the applications is 5 p.m. on October 14.
