Naman Dhir, who was included in India’s T20I squad as a replacement for Washington Sundar, has now made his T20I debut for the country. The Punjab all-rounder received his debut cap from his state teammate Arshdeep Singh, making the moment even more special.
Dhir’s selection also gives a clear indication of what India are looking for in their T20I combination. The team needs a batter who can also provide a few useful overs of off-spin, particularly after Washington Sundar was withdrawn from the squad.
Dhir has certainly earned this opportunity with his recent performances.
The 26-year-old was outstanding in the 2026 Sher-E-Punjab T20 League. One of his best performances came for Amritsar Soormas against Mohali Kings, when he smashed a massive 173 off just 64 balls, including 16 fours and 12 sixes.
It was not only his batting that made the performance special. Dhir also picked up 2 wickets for just 8 runs in the same match, showing exactly why his all-round ability can be useful for India.
His overall numbers in that tournament were also impressive. Dhir scored 525 runs in seven innings at an average of 87.50 and a strike rate of 214.29, including two centuries and two fifties. He also contributed regularly with his off-spin.
Dhir has also shown his ability in 50-over cricket. In List A cricket, he has scored 351 runs at an average of 39.00 and a strike rate of 106.36, with a highest score of 97. With the ball, he has taken 7 wickets, with best figures of 2/28.
He had already received his first opportunity for India in the ODI series against West Indies before being called into the T20I squad. Dhir was originally brought into the T20I setup after Washington Sundar was withdrawn to prepare for India’s upcoming Test series against New Zealand.
The decision to give Dhir his T20I debut suggests India are interested in developing another batter who can provide an off-spin option.
India already have specialist bowling options, but in T20 cricket, a middle-order batter who can contribute one or two overs gives the captain more flexibility. Dhir’s power-hitting makes that combination even more interesting.
His domestic performances have earned him the opportunity. Now the challenge for Naman Dhir is to show that the same combination of aggressive batting and useful off-spin can work at the international level as well.
