Australia registered a dominant 214-run victory over South Africa in the first Test at Kingsmead, Durban, with Matt Renshaw, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood playing major roles in the contest.
The visitors once again showed why they remain one of the strongest teams in Test cricket. More importantly, Australia managed to put South Africa under tremendous pressure in their own conditions. While the bowling attack was impressive, the biggest positive was Matt Renshaw, who made an outstanding return to Test cricket.
Matt Renshaw Emerges as Australia’s Biggest Positive
If we look at the individual performances in the Australia vs South Africa 1st Test, Matt Renshaw was undoubtedly Australia’s biggest positive. Returning to Test cricket after a long gap, the left-handed batter immediately made his presence felt with a magnificent 190 in the first innings.
Australia were struggling at 124/6 when Renshaw took responsibility and helped his side reach 390. Pat Cummins supported him with a valuable 43, while Nathan Lyon also contributed 27 runs.
Renshaw continued his impressive performance in the second innings, scoring another important 82. What made his performance even more special was his contribution with the ball. The part-time off-spinner also provided important breakthroughs, showing that he could contribute in more than one department.
For Australia, finding a reliable middle-order batter who can perform under pressure is a major positive. Renshaw has certainly strengthened his case for a regular place in Australia’s Test XI.
Pat Cummins Shows Why His Presence Is So Important
Another major positive for Australia was the return of captain Pat Cummins. Cummins contributed with both bat and ball, but his leadership was equally impressive.
In the first innings, when Australia were struggling, Cummins played an important knock of 43 and supported Renshaw in rebuilding the innings. He also picked up three wickets during South Africa’s first innings, providing important breakthroughs when the hosts were looking to build partnerships.
However, his contribution in Australia’s second innings deserves special mention. Cummins smashed an unbeaten 32 off just 12 deliveries, attacking the South African bowlers and helping Australia extend their advantage.
His aggressive batting allowed Australia to declare at 314/6 and set South Africa a massive target of 421. Apart from his individual performance, Cummins also impressed with his captaincy. His decisions regarding attacking fields, bowling changes and the timing of the declaration reflected his importance to this Australian side.
Josh Hazlewood’s Bowling Masterclass Destroys South Africa
Josh Hazlewood once again demonstrated why he is considered one of the finest fast bowlers in Test cricket. The Australian pacer took two wickets in South Africa’s first innings and followed that with an outstanding six-wicket performance in the second.
Hazlewood’s biggest strength has always been his ability to maintain an accurate line and length while consistently troubling batters. He used those qualities brilliantly against South Africa.
Even when the hosts tried to build partnerships, Hazlewood continued to create pressure and provide breakthroughs. His performance was particularly important because South Africa still had hopes of saving the match through Aiden Markram’s resistance. However, Australia’s experienced fast bowler made sure the hosts never settled comfortably.
South Africa’s Batting Failure Proves Costly
South Africa’s biggest problem throughout the contest was their inability to convert starts into substantial scores. In the first innings, several batters got starts, but none managed to produce the kind of innings that could challenge Australia’s total. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 284.
Pat Cummins claimed three wickets, while Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon picked up two wickets each.
In the second innings, Aiden Markram scored 75 and tried to keep South Africa’s hopes alive. David Bedingham also made useful contributions, but the hosts struggled to build the partnerships required to chase such a massive target. South Africa were bowled out for 206, handing Australia a 214-run victory.
Australia Have Found Two Major Positives
The biggest positives for Australia from the first Test were the performances of Matt Renshaw and Pat Cummins. Renshaw’s return gives Australia another dependable batting option, particularly in situations where the top order fails.
Cummins, on the other hand, reminded everyone of his value as a captain and an all-round contributor. With Josh Hazlewood continuing to deliver match-winning spells, Australia’s bowling attack remains extremely dangerous.
For South Africa, losing control of a Test match at home raises serious questions about their batting approach. Australia’s commanding 214-run victory in the first Test has demonstrated the difference between the two sides, particularly in handling pressure and taking advantage of important moments. This also ended the unbeaten streak of captain Temba Bavuma in this format.
