Bhuvneshwar Kumar has made an unexpected return to India’s squad ahead of the fifth and final T20I against West Indies. An injury to Arshdeep Singh’s bowling shoulder has brought the experienced pacer back into the picture earlier than expected, with the series level at 2–2.
Bhuvneshwar had already been selected for the upcoming New Zealand T20I series. His first appearance in India colours since November 2022 was expected to come on that tour. Instead, he now has a strong chance of making his international comeback in the West Indies decider.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns After Arshdeep’s Injury
Arshdeep suffered the shoulder injury after being struck by a Shamar Joseph delivery while batting in the fourth T20I in Hyderabad. India have added Bhuvneshwar to the squad, while a decision on Arshdeep’s participation will depend on his recovery before the final match.
For Bhuvneshwar, this creates an immediate opportunity to return to the playing XI. His inclusion is particularly significant because India need greater control from their pace attack in a match that will decide the series.
Given his experience and recent form, there is a strong case for playing him straight away. His place in the XI, however, has not yet been officially confirmed.
IPL Form Makes a Strong Case for His Comeback
Bhuvneshwar’s return follows an outstanding IPL 2026 season. He finished as the tournament’s second-highest wicket-taker, taking 28 wickets in 16 matches.
Kagiso Rabada finished just ahead with 29 wickets in 17 matches. Bhuvneshwar therefore ended only one wicket behind the Purple Cap winner despite playing one fewer game, underlining how close he came to finishing on top.
His economy rate of 7.95 also showed that he could keep runs under control while taking wickets. That combination strengthens the argument that his international return was already overdue.
What Bhuvneshwar Can Bring to the Decider
With India unable to close out the series in four matches, Bhuvneshwar offers an experienced option for two crucial stages of the innings.
With the new ball, his swing and disciplined line and length can help India build pressure early. At the death, his yorkers, slower deliveries and changes of pace give the captain different ways to restrict scoring.
That flexibility could be valuable in a deciding match, where one expensive spell can change the result. Bhuvneshwar’s selection gives India the option of turning to a bowler who can take responsibility both at the start and towards the end of the innings.
