A champion team, an auction full of expectations, and one clear ambition: to become champions again. RCB’s player releases had left fans wondering what they were planning. For a side defending its WPL title, every decision would be judged against the standards it had already set.
RCB have won the competition twice. Their recent approach, across both the men’s and women’s teams, has shown greater focus on specific roles and team requirements. The question this time was whether their auction decisions would address the gaps in an already strong side.
To understand their purchases, we first need to understand what they needed.
RCB Auction Analysis: Two Gaps to Fill
RCB retained four main overseas players: Ellyse Perry, Georgia Voll, Nadine de Klerk and Lauren Bell. After releasing their other overseas options, they needed dependable cover.
An injury or a loss of form could affect any of those four. RCB therefore needed replacements capable of entering the XI and winning matches. Different pitches could also require a change in their overseas combination.
Their second need was an Indian middle-order batter who could rebuild after early wickets.
The top three looked strong. Further down, Richa Ghosh, de Klerk, Radha Yadav and a fit Pooja Vastrakar offered batting depth and hitting options. The missing piece was a technically sound batter who could hold the innings together when the top order failed.
What Did RCB Buy?
RCB added Jess Jonassen and Chloe Tryon as overseas options, while Tejal Hasabnis and Vrinda Dinesh strengthened their Indian batting resources.
These four additions must be judged by how well they address those two requirements.
Jess Jonassen and Chloe Tryon: Strong Overseas Cover
Jonassen is good enough to make a strong case for selection in almost any side. Having a player of her quality available as backup gives RCB considerable depth.
Her left-arm spin and batting also make her a genuine selection option when conditions change. On a turning surface, RCB could consider replacing Bell with Jonassen, strengthening their spin attack and adding batting depth.
A former world No. 1 ODI bowler, Jonassen brings experience and the ability to contribute in more than one department. Her role need not be limited to covering an injury.
Tryon gives RCB another match-winning alternative. If an overseas player becomes unavailable or the team needs a different batting combination, she provides another experienced option.
Together, they give the management strong overseas cover and more freedom to select according to conditions.
Tejal Hasabnis: A Batter for a Specific Situation
RCB’s Indian middle-order requirement was more difficult to fill. The available options were limited, particularly for a batter expected to rebuild an innings.
Kiran Navgire offered an alternative, but her attacking approach was less suited to the role identified here. Hasabnis was the better fit for that particular job.
Her technique and ability in the longer white-ball format make her a sensible choice. Her recent T20 appearances against Australia A also included useful contributions, showing that she can attack when required.
RCB can use her according to the match situation. If early wickets fall, she can come in to settle the innings. If the top order provides a strong platform, Ghosh and de Klerk can move ahead of her to maintain the scoring rate.
Hasabnis therefore does not have to occupy a fixed position regardless of circumstances. Her main value is giving RCB a rebuilding option when they need one.
There may be stronger Indian middle-order batters elsewhere, but auction choices depend on availability. Within those limits, she fits the requirement.
Dinesh provides additional batting cover. She can be considered as an opener or used in the middle order, giving RCB another option when adjusting their combination.
RCB Expected Playing XI
| Position | Player |
|---|---|
| 1 | Smriti Mandhana |
| 2 | Georgia Voll |
| 3 | Ellyse Perry |
| 4 | Tejal Hasabnis |
| 5 | Richa Ghosh |
| 6 | Nadine de Klerk |
| 7 | Pooja Vastrakar, subject to fitness |
| 8 | Radha Yadav |
| 9 | Arundhati Reddy |
| 10 | Shreyanka Patil |
| 11 | Lauren Bell |
Hasabnis can move down the order if the situation calls for Ghosh or de Klerk to attack earlier.
Jonassen can enter the XI depending on conditions. Prema Rawat offers another option on spin-friendly pitches, while Sayali Satghare can be considered when seam movement is likely to matter. Dinesh provides further batting cover.
Does This XI Have Championship Quality?
Mandhana, Voll and Perry form a formidable top three. Ghosh and de Klerk offer attacking strength further down, while Vastrakar’s fitness could add another valuable batting and bowling option.
Shreyanka Patil and Radha Yadav provide the main spin combination. Voll can offer occasional support, while Jonassen and Rawat give RCB ways to strengthen that department.
The pace resources include Bell, Arundhati Reddy, de Klerk and Perry. A fit Vastrakar would give the captain another option.
That range allows RCB to adapt to different pitches. They have top-order quality, lower-order hitting and several bowling choices. If the players perform to their potential and the fitness concerns are resolved, this team can challenge strongly for another WPL title.

Final Auction Verdict
RCB’s overseas backup deserves full marks. Their Indian batting additions also address clear roles, particularly the need for someone who can rebuild after early wickets.
The small reservation is whether the middle order could have included an even stronger Indian batter. However, the limited options available must be considered. RCB selected players who fit their requirements and improved the flexibility of an already successful team.
Final auction rating: 9.5/10.
