The makers of Halide just made Kino the latest iPhone 17 Pro video app – 9to5Mac

Date:

Kino, the pro video capture app for iOS, just received an update that makes it the ultimate filming app for iPhone 17 Pro.

The team at Lux Optics, the company behind Halide and Kino, explains how today’s version 1.4 update allows iPhone 17 Pro users to take full advantage of their camera hardware:

Today we’re launching support for Apple Log 2 in our award-winning video app, Kino. Apple Log 2 is a new format that was launched alongside the iPhone 17 Pro. To understand what makes it special, let’s dig into the concept of Log and RAW video, why each camera manufacturer uses a unique format, and why we took our time to add support for Kino.

Naturally, a super informative and detailed blog post accompanies the update, providing a great resource for learning more about Apple Log 2 and how Kino 1.4 takes advantage of Apple technology. The blog post even contains a preview of what the future might hold for Halide and Kino:

I love working at Kino, our users love it and I have ambitious plans ahead. However, the final version of the Halide Mark III is still our top priority. So what do we do? Maybe jump back and forth between apps for a bit. Big Halide updates will follow the shorter Kino updates.

The long-term plan is to unify the rendering system between applications. As we just showed you, RAW photo and Log video are very similar. By unifying some technologies, we can share technical improvements in both applications with less duplication of work.

If video is more your speed, there’s also one to learn more about Apple Log and what Kino 1.4 supports:

film is available for $9.99 on the App Store. Today’s release is available as a free update to existing Kino customers.
