Big money, big flop! 3 expensive players who could fail badly in IPL 2026

Date:

The Indian Premier League (IPL) auction often sees franchises spending massive amounts to secure marquee players, but high price tags usually bring immense pressure. Several high-profile cricketers carry the burden of huge auction valuations and could underperform during the two-month tournament.

Historical trends suggest that expensive overseas recruits often struggle to meet expectations. With the 19th edition set to begin soon, three high-priced international stars face a tough challenge to justify their price tags and overcome recent poor form to avoid being labeled the costliest flops of the season.

3 Expensive Players Who Could Fail Badly in IPL 2026

Cameron Green – Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) signed Cameron Green for a whopping ₹25.20 crore during the recent IPL mini auction, making him the most expensive player.

Green will carry unprecedented expectations heading into the new season. KKR invested heavily in his all-round abilities, and anything less than a stellar, match-winning campaign will be closely scrutinized by the management and fans.

He scored 452 runs at an average of 50.22 and a strike rate of 160.28, including one century and two half-centuries during his debut 2023 season. Green also picked up six wickets at an economy rate of 9.50. However, he managed 255 runs in 13 innings at an average of 31.88 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024.

The right-handed batter struggled to make an impact during the T20 World Cup. He scored 24 runs in three innings at an average of 8.00 and a strike rate of 120.00. With the ball, he picked up one wicket at an average of 19.00.

Matheesha Pathirana – Kolkata Knight Riders

Matheesha Pathirana will join Kolkata Knight Riders with a price tag of ₹18 crore. The franchise has high expectations for him to deliver under pressure. While he established himself as a death-overs specialist for Chennai Super Kings, moving to a new team brings fresh challenges.

He suffered a severe left-leg injury after bowling just four deliveries against Australia during the T20 World Cup 2026. The right-arm pacer has taken 47 wickets in 32 IPL matches at an economy rate of 8.68. However, his ongoing fitness concerns and the pressure of his price tag could lead to inconsistent performances.

It is worth mentioning that the Sri Lanka pacer is yet to join the three-time IPL champions for the tournament preparations. He is likely to miss the initial matches before joining the squad.

Liam Livingstone – SunRisers Hyderabad

Liam Livingsone was the most expensive buy for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The franchise invested in him for a whopping ₹13 Crore during last year’s auction. Livingstone will face intense pressure to perform consistently with both bat and ball.

The power hitter struggled to deliver when facing elite spin bowling on slower Indian surfaces. His recent professional statistics indicate a sharp decline in form across all formats.

During 2025, he managed just 74 runs across five T20Is while picking up a single wicket at a 10.16 economy rate. His previous IPL 2025 campaign was equally poor, scoring only 112 runs from eight innings at a dismal average of 16.00 and a strike rate of 133.33.
